Nikon Capture CommentaryEnd of Line - Version: 4.4.2, 2/11/2008 12:00AM PST

In case anyone is waiting for this to be Leopard-compatible, here's the short answer: It won't.

I hadn't realized this, and contacted Nikon on the phone. Spoke to a tech who told me that Capture Control is terminated, and has been replaced by Capture Control Pro.

And, oh yeah, as of this date (2-11-08) the tech told me that Capture Control Pro is NOT Leopard-compatible either!!

Ohhhh-kay....

Nikon Capture Troubleshooting ReportNikon Capture Editor 4.4.2 - Missing Profile? - Version: 4.4.2, 9/19/2006 09:02PM PST

After updating, when I launch Nikon Capture Editor 4.4.2, it says: "One of your profiles, Resources, is missing or corrupt. Please reinstall the software." If you double click the app again, it will successfully launch, however.

Nikon Capture Reviewuneventful update -- everything seems to work properly - Version: 4.4.1, 12/15/2005 09:16PM PST

nikon capture does the raw conversion cleanly on my d2x and d70 images. i'm always satisfied with the conversion. i find nikon capture relatively usable when you're not under pressure to meet a deadline. speed is just o-k on my powerbook, but it still needs more improvement.

i also have a dual processor g5, and since apple's new machines are mostly dual or quad processors, i think nikon should design nikon capture to utilize these multi-processor systems.

if you're working on a few images, then nikon capture is o-k, but if you have many images to convert and edit, and you're on a deadline, then i'd recommend using something like Adobe Bridge and Camera Raw.

Nikon Capture Troubleshooting ReportThis is how installing worked for me, with (yes) help from Nikon Support - Version: 4.3.2, 11/6/2005 10:59PM PST

I followed the following recommendation from Nikon Support to the letter and after I had almost given up before, this works great. Hope everyone else will benefit from this recommendation (I've done this in OSX 10.4.3):

1. Go-Applications-Nikon Software and delete the Nikon Capture folder.
2. Go-Home-Library-Preferences and delete all Nikon files and folders.
3. Go to the link below to download and instal Nikon Capture 4.2.1 install it, do not install the version from the cd.

Title: Current Versions of Nikon Software
URL: http://support.nikontech.com/cgi-bin/nikonusa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=61&p_created=1029180813

4. Unstuff this with Stuffit 9. I know that you indicated that you have stuffit 9 but stuffit 10 was released so it is important that we manually unstuff and install Nikon Capture with 9. (My note: start Stuffit Expander 9.02 and drag the .sit file onto the open app to expand -- I had the files on the Desktop)

5. Update to Nikon Capture 4.3.1 (My note: do exactly like step 4).
-- This worked and I then upgraded to 4.3.2 in the same way. So far I have not noticed speed decrease like other users reported on my machine.

Nikon Capture Troubleshooting ReportDoes Nikon pay attention to Mac software guidelines? - Version: 4.3.2, 10/31/2005 06:48AM PST

4.3 was once again dog slow, even with 4MP D2HS files. 4.3.1 addressed the speed (though it is still much too slow) but introduced horrid artifacting because of an Altivec bug. 4.3.2 fixed the artifacting . . . and maintained the speed of 4.3.1 for a few flickering hours, before it became even slower than 4.3 after I installed the latest OS X 10.3.9 security update on my PowerMac -- Update 008. On my Powerbook, without the security update, it's OK, though I wouldn't want to be doing D2X files on it.

As I've never had compatibility ruined by a security update before, it makes me wonder just how much attention Nikon is paying to Mac software guidelines. Get Photoshop or Aperture instead of wasting your money on this.

Nikon Capture ReviewUpdating issues - Version: 4.3.2, 10/7/2005 12:00AM PST

Experienced the same oddities the other posters detailed. First, the installer could not find the applications, Nikon Capture Editor or Nikon Capture Control, even though they were both in the default locations the original installer placed them off the CD.

My installed version was 4.3.0 - so I suspected the updater could not make the giant leap to 4.3.2 until first updating to 4.3.1 - picked that updater up as a .sit file on Version Tracker. Placed the .sit file in the same folder with the Nikon apps before expanding it - giving it the shortest line of sight to the apps. (OK, maybe it wasn't necessary or my reasoning is shoot from the hip - but found joy) Then it ran, found what it needed, updated the apps and requested a restart.

Then I expanded the 4.3.2 updater in the same folder (first removing the 4.3.1 updater folder) and it ran and this time found the apps. Installer performed the update routine and requested a restart. After restart, I checked the version of Nikon Capture Editor and I was 4.3.1.303!! Getting another hunch, I ran the update installer again and instead of it telling me that I was already up to date, it did its run again. Rebooted, now the apps say 4.3.2.303.

I'll describe the whole fun time as quite dorky and backassward. Nikon's web site is sort of that way also - hard to figure out how to find anything -instead of just being able to jumpt to the software downloads, you have to play twenty questions and first find your camera's selections- and the newest versions of the Nikon Capture apps are not even there!

I do not agree that Photoshop CS2 does a better (or equal) job with the NEF files. Photoshop is trying to be all things to all things RAW and washing out in its effort (in my opinion only.) Yes it is better than what shipped with CS1, but the Nikon dedicated proprietary app just gives me quicker, and most importantly, better results - it just knows its own files better. So now that the unexpected quit issue is supposedly resolved, I'm even happier and very much recommend starting the editing process with Nikon Capture Editor, then moving the "saved as TIFF" into Photoshop (never save a change to the original NEF!)

Nikon Capture ReviewIt gets even worse - Version: 4.3.2, 10/5/2005 03:24AM PST

After wasting many hours trying to install this mongrel bit of rubbish I gave up. After the umpteenth restart, Nikon View took it upon itself to configure an auto-start even though I have never touched this app, as I consider it even more useless than Capture. Such arrogance! I never want to see another piece of Nikon S@#T software again! Oh and just try to download the PDF use manual for Capture from Nikon's web site. Safari quits every time and, one time, the whole machine locked up.

Nikon Capture CommentaryNikon need to urgently hire some real programmers - Version: 4.3.2, 10/4/2005 10:17PM PST

Grrr Nikon's hardware is excellent but their software makes my blood boil. I have my drive partitioned. I don't like Apple's scheme of putting everything in pne place. I want my apps on the Applications partition. Nikon's 4.32 updater is too stupid to look around. It sees no base app on the System partition so declares that I do not have the app installed. Sigh

Re-install app on system partition just so I can update it then move it where I want it. 4.32 still cannot help because it wants me to use the 4.1 and 4.2 updaters first. How !@#$%%^ing stupid!

Run the 4.1 updater. Try to run the 4.2 updater. Suddenly things are going seriously wrong. According to a dialog box, there is something missing, a PACE extension. (Hang on...I just ran the original installer. How can something be missing?)

Would I like to go to the PACE web site and downloaod an instlaler? Ohg well, if I must. Click the OK button. Nothing. Click the Cancel button. Nothing. Now I have this dumb dialog box staring at me. Taunting me. Driving me nuts.

And that's not all. There is another dialog box. You have just installed software that requires a restart. so you MUST DO IT NOW!!!

Well, I have some important FTP activity ging on. I don't want to re-start NOW thank you. Too bad. Now I have this second dialong box staring at me, driving me nuts.

Nikon is not the only offender in this department. Why oh why can't we see a dialog box that says "A restart will be needed before you use your new software. Do it now? Remind me later?

And don't even get me started about Nikon's other software offerings.

I mean, it's not even as if this software adds anything to most people's toolbox. I only have it "just in case". Photoshop with its excellent RAW format plug-in does everything I need.
