Product Description:

Notational Velocity is an application that stores and retrieves notes. In Notational Velocity, the same area is used both for creating notes and searching. I.e., in the process of entering the title for a new note, related notes appear below, letting users file information there if they choose. Likewise, if a search reveals nothing, one need simply press return to create a note with the appropriate title. Its unique advantages are as follows:
  • Modeless Operation
Searching for notes is not a separate action; rather, it is the primary interface.
  • Incremental Search
Searching encompasses all notes' content and occurs instantly with each key pressed.
  • Transparent Encryption
All information is compressed and encrypted (enabled optionally) before it is recorded to disk.
  • Mouseless Interaction
Notational Velocity's window was designed for keyboard input above all else, and thus has no buttons.
  • Data Instead of Documents
There is no manual "saving" in Notational Velocity; all modifications take effect immediately.

What's new in this version:

  • Fully 64-bit native (thanks to Brian Bergstrand)
  • Added "New Note With Selection" Services menu item
  • Fixed a bug with accent keys in certain keyboard layouts
  • The default encoding for text files is now UTF-8. Notes using the system encoding will be upgraded.
  • Extended attributes are used to provide text encoding hints to QuickLook and TextEdit.
  • The Import menu item command allows using the file creation date as the "Date Added".
  • Fixed a sorting issue when the sorting column was hidden
  • Deleting part of an auto-completed title will deselect the note.
  • Database file is verified while writing to disk to avoid corruption
  • Command to insert auto-generated passwords into a note
  • Importing of tab-separated-value files (e.g., from Pastor)
  • Now using Sparkle version 1.5b6
  • "Show Bookmarks" menu item toggles to "Hide Bookmarks"
  • Allow option-dragging to copy note files when notes are stored as separate files
  • Many memory leaks fixed

Notational Velocity ReviewFast & Efficient! ...but entirely black & white? - Version: 2.0 b1, 11/15/2009 11:45AM PST

Fast & Efficient! ...but Notational Velocity could use text & background colors.

I use text-colors for emphasis and categorization in my notes-to-self. (Such as money-matters might be in green text, while creative ideas might be in purple text.) Background colors could be used in a similar manner.

(Please reply to this review if I have overlooked the ability to apply text & background colors...)

Extra-credit points for: Very clever application name (!) & fresh graphics on developer website.

Notational Velocity ReviewExcellent! - Version: 2.0 b1, 10/5/2009 09:13AM PST

This is a very simple application whose function is so effective as to make it very useful for keeping notes. Though graphics are not embedded, it allows one to make notes and to search for them so easily and quickly that it is really impressive. Allowing for one to export notes in UTF-8 is a great idea for those that use two-byte fonts. Any improvements, at this point, would be adding luster to the original concept.

I would only caution the author to consider carefully any additional "improvements" since very few applications can be the sum of all things.

Notational Velocity ReviewLongtime Favorite, Better Than Ever - Version: 2.0 b, 9/21/2009 10:53AM PST

Still the simplest note-taker I know of, with some excellent additions like live URL's, note renaming, and tags. Thanks and thanks.
