Endicia CommentaryWhy Subscription???? - Version: 2.7, 5/8/2008 07:03AM PST

Why are Macintosh users compelled to subscribe to a service just to buy postage? If you're running a business that requires significant monthly mailing then obviously this is a no brainer. But Windows users seem to have options that allow them to buy postage on an as-needed basis, and directly from the postal service, with no subscriptions... Why don't Mac users have these options? I have a UPS account, and can pay on an as-needed basis, with no monthly subscription? Don't get me wrong, I see Endicia's service as a good one, just not what I need or want, or am willing to pay for.

With Endicia, you can print labels for First Class, Media Mail, Parcel Post and Priority Mail in addition to some (if not most) international countries. The USPS website "Click-N-Ship" allows you to print labels only for Priority Mail, no first class or media mail. Paypal allows you to print labels for First Class and Media Mail in addition to Priority Mail, but only for items paid for through Paypal. With Endicia, you can mail out to anyone, without these limitations. I use it mostly for shipping of my eBay auction items.

The software works so well it's a joy to use. I can even add a picture or company logo next to my return addres! The labels print out exceedingly well and there are several different options for printers to use (including an existing laser/inkjet). I purchased the 25lb digital scale from Endicia and it's great! Just click on 'weigh' in the software and it automatically calculates and fills in the postage for you.

Although I wish the service fee was a bit less, on the other hand, for less than the cost of one pizza per month, you get full a featured shipping solution right on your Mac.

With this latest version, Endicia has added the ability to print postage directly on envelopes. It works well.

i just started using endicia but am completely thrilled with it. i hesitated to sign up because it costs more than stamps.com did on the PC. but it is SO much easier to use than stamps.com and not just because it's on the mac and everything is better on the mac. the client software for endicia works flawlessly, is intuitive, and has features that stamps.com does not. it also of course looks much better. signing up is easy and buying postage is a snap. i wish it didn't cost so much per month, but it's made it so much easier for me to ship things i've sold on amazon.com etc. that i think it's worth it. i'll be at least that much more productive.

it would be really nice though if these services could, perhaps, not charge for months when you didn't use them at all. that would make signing up a no-brainer. for this i had to be ready to ship a lot of packages before i was willing to take the plunge, after several years of a stamps.com membership on an ugly old PC which i never used except for that one purpose... and all the months that went by when i didn't send packages just cost me money.

it seems that with endicia it's much easier to cancel a membership if you have to though, and so if you know in advance that you won't be using it i suppose you could just cancel and then sign up again later.
