Product Description:

ntop is a network probe that shows network usage in a way similar to what top does for processes. In interactive mode, it displays the network status on the user's terminal. In Web mode, it acts as a Web server, creating an HTML dump of the network status. It sports a NetFlow/sFlow emitter/collector, and an HTTP-based client interface for creating ntop-centric monitoring applications.

ntop CommentaryNot a compiled binary - Version: 3.3.9, 2/8/2009 02:05PM PST

I really like ntop, but there hasn't been a Mac OS X compiled binary available since version 3.2. The package that is available contains the source code, but it takes Xcode and some knowledge of how to make and compile object code for one to be able to make this into a usable product. I don't have the requisite skills (nor do I have the disk space for Apple's Developer Tools), so unless or until someone makes a freely-available binary, this update is only for those who can "roll their own."

Beware of this tool. It throwed a kernel panic on my 10.4.5 machine.

When, oh when will VersionTracker inaugurate a Unix section for command-line only, non-GUI utilities? By and large, this (and many other entries) is not appropriate for general Mac user consumption.
