Alfred CommentaryIndispensable - Version: 1.6.2, 9/14/2005 07:13PM PST

This app is completely indispensible! Unfortunately it hasn't been updated for OS 10.4, so out of the box it doesn't manage Dashboard Widgets or Spotlight (for example).

Fortunately, it is very flexible and customisable. After I got 10.4 it only took a minute or two to add both of those to Alfred. In other words, the program is well enough designed that the fact that it hasn't been updated is a nonissue. Great program.

That being said, if the author would just add these once, all the individual users wouldn't have to.

VersionTracker has it listed as $8, but when I went to register, it is listed as $30.

Alfred CommentaryGreat, but... - Version: 1.6.1, 8/6/2003 02:32AM PST

This is a great little utility, except for one glaring flaw! When you click on a component you get a fair bit of info (date created, modified etc) but the most useful information - version string - is NOT displayed. Why?

This is a great utility, well worth the money. Not only does it help to manage kernel extensions, plugins, sounds, colorsync profiles, fonts, Apps, Palm conduits, and pretty much everything else, but it also makes instaling plugins, screensavers, preference panes, etc. a snap. Thanks Alfred.

I've been using Alfred for quite some time now and I must say it has been steadily improving to the point where it is now a tremendously convenient way to manage all the OS X plug-ins and other "nonsense" that is strewn over so many hard to reach folders. Apple should have made this functionality part of OS X from the beginning. No matter, we have Alfred!

manager is slow and really needs to be fixed. It just isn't usable. It like using Tweak-XP for Windows XP. It has all this potential but can't be used 'cause it's so slow. So why do I give it 4 stars...the CMM Plug-In. I right click on almost anything and it installs it for me...other CMM's, ScreenSavers, Printer PPD's. It saves so much time since I don't have to navigate thru the file system anymore.

have been heard. Alfred 1.4 finally provides threaded manager refreshes: the application is not blocked anymore. Contextual help (tooltips) have also been added for a better user experience. iGreg: Using ConflictCatcher as a basis to understand Alfred is not a good idea, products are completely different. Customizable rules allow advanced users to further customize the application, novice users have no need to know about them. A grayed out control means that you can't use it. I guess you were talking about system files which are protected by default.

Item managers give me a spinning beachball forever. Looks to have potential.

understand how to use the manager. I read the documentation and do not get it. I used to use Conflict Catcher with OS 8 & 9 and was able to understand it. This is no Conflict Catcher. The stuff about rules over-complicates everything. How can an item be enabled with a checkmark and yet greyed out (disabled).

to use than sjonke, but he's right about no button labels, no tooltips. Think it's wrong to blame slow loading on certain classes? Ever use the ASP? Shouldn't require a complete reload when switching back, however, to one category. Not ready to use full time/buy yet, but clearly something is needed beyond the freeware Diablotin. Hope this becomes the Conflict Catcher of OSX. :) Still needs work and would rate 3 but give this a 4 because of all the updates. Good app to keep an eye on. Inferlis Software rocks because of MacReporter, but it's broken IMO (there is a kludge: reinstall/relaunch it every time on boot or login) regardless of what Inferlis says by 10.2.2. There's too much junk floating around and that's one reason Alfred is needed.
