Product Description:

A shortfall of Mac OS X has just gone. Alfred is an easy to use, customizable, universal plug-in manager. Inspired from Mac OS 9's Finder and Extensions Manager, taking care of Mac OS X specificities, it improves user experience to install, remove and manage any kind of plug-ins like screen savers, preference panes, fonts... or anything else.

Main features

  • Easy plug-in installation, management and removal.
  • Dedicated user interface cataloging installed plug-ins.
  • Generic engine using customizable rules.
  • One-click plug-in installation using the contextual menu module from the Finder.

What's new in this version:

  • When installing several similar files at once, Alfred now remembers the destination settings of the first file and uses them for the next ones instead of asking for every file.
  • It is now necessary to authenticate only once when repeatedly launching Alfred to perform some administration operations within a short period of time.
  • Added support for copying files into the clipboard from the managers.
  • The built-in rules are not editable anymore.
  • Added a button in the rule inspector to explicitly turn a built-in rule into a custom rule so that it can be edited.
  • The "Alfred" item from the "Window" menu nows toggles the main window.
  • The "Flyer" item from the "Window" menu nows toggles the flyer window.
  • The items of the main menu related to the installation and the management of the files were not working with the managers.
  • When installing several files at once, the report was not generated if the last installed file was not reported.
  • In the rule inspector, the pending confirmation dialog for deleting a rule description was not correctly dismissed when the inspected rule changed.
  • Fixed the cascading behavior of most windows of the application.
  • Cleaned some code.

Alfred CommentaryIndispensable - Version: 1.6.2, 9/14/2005 07:13PM PST

This app is completely indispensible! Unfortunately it hasn't been updated for OS 10.4, so out of the box it doesn't manage Dashboard Widgets or Spotlight (for example).

Fortunately, it is very flexible and customisable. After I got 10.4 it only took a minute or two to add both of those to Alfred. In other words, the program is well enough designed that the fact that it hasn't been updated is a nonissue. Great program.

That being said, if the author would just add these once, all the individual users wouldn't have to.

Alfred CommentaryGreat, but... - Version: 1.6.1, 8/6/2003 02:32AM PST

This is a great little utility, except for one glaring flaw! When you click on a component you get a fair bit of info (date created, modified etc) but the most useful information - version string - is NOT displayed. Why?
