Product Description:

FolderGuard is a utility designed to keep your folders private from prying eyes, and to do that cost-effectively and easily. FolderGuard makes hiding folders on any of your disks as easy as clicking a button. No command line commands or other wizardry needed. Version 2.5 is a complete rewrite of the application, so it now takes advantage of Mac OS X's technologies, such as the operating system's built-in administrator authentication system. FolderGuard respects Mac OS X's multiuser operating model, saving each user's personal preferences in their respective home directories. Additionally, FolderGuard 2.5 utilizes 448-bit Blowfish encryption to secure your preference files and logs.

What's new in this version:

  • FolderGuard now skips over the hidden "Icon" files used by the system to store folder custom icons. As a result, the program should no longer make Icon files visible when unhiding folders.
  • Results of Mass Reveal are now reflected by the main window, so if a folder that was previously hidden is inside a folder that the user uses Mass Reveal on, the folder state is now correctly updated to Visible.
  • Synced the OS 9 version with the OS X version 2.5 codebase, fixing a number of bugs and adding new features to the OS 9 version, listed below:
    • Uses strong 448-bit Blowfish encryption
    • Folder list allows multiple selections
    • Displays number of items; number of invisible items; and number of selected items
    • Expanded folder info
    • No longer attempts to hide or unhide items on locked volumes, which would result in a hang
    • Folder list is now sortable by name or by visibility status
    • A folder can now be shown in the Finder through FolderGuard
    • Optionally write failed and/or successful logins and other special operations to log file
    • By default disallows volume hiding. This feature can be turned off.
    • Optionally auto-unhide folders when removing them from the list without displaying a warning
    • Missing folders are displayed with an error icon on launch, and the application no longer attempts to hide them.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.3
  • Mac OS X 10.2
  • Mac OS X 10.1

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.1 or higher

FolderGuard X ReviewBIG problems - Version: 2.5.2, 10/6/2004 08:12AM PST

... the exact same problem of willoneal's. Hid a folder, it didn't hide, unhid the folder, it came back but everything inside was gone, then the app "unexpectedly quit". Nice. Thanks a lot. What's even more strange is that the folder still knows it holds those files as the folder size is the same as it used to be, about 15 GB. So, I am now forced to learn the terminal to make them visible again.

This app sucks, sorry, but the simple fact that the above is even possible makes it unworthy of a download, let alone any cash. Sure wish silly little "LameSecure" would come back...

I've experienced the "items inside a folder seem to vanish" problem, too, although not frequently. It's not a serious problem, mind you, since the items don't get deleted or anything, they just remain invisible. This has happened a few times since Mac OS 10.2. I'm not sure if this is a FolderGuard problem or in fact a bug in Mac OS X. Regardless: to remedy the situation, set the folder to visible in FolderGuard and then just logout or relaunch the Finder. There's a Relaunch Finder command in the File menu of the app. One time I had to actually restart my Mac to get a folder that was on the desktop back, but no files were lost. Aside from those probs, I think it's a useful and usable product.

FolderGuard X ReviewDoesn't work for me either... - Version: 2.5.2, 6/12/2003 09:12AM PST

I duplicated a folder (since I read the previous review) and opened it up with this program. I toggled it to be invisible. It didn't turn invisible, but everything inside it was gone. I then toggled it to be visible, and nothing came back. Good thing I used a duplicate of my important info first.
