Product Description:

ffmpegX is a Mac OS X GUI to ffmpeg the "hyper fast video and audio encoder" (http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net/). It can decode MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 (aka DIVX4/5), VOB, AVI MS-MPEG4 V3 (aka DIVX 3), WAV, Real Audio, H263(+) (aka RealVideo 1.0), PGM, YUV, PPM, AC3, PCM8/16 bits, mulaw/Alaw, WMA, SUN AU format, MPEG audio layer 2, MPEG audio layer 3, MJPEG and even more formats. This GUI provides quick encoding to DivX, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MP2, MP3 & AC3. MPEG-2 encoding relies on mpeg2enc component from the mjpegtools package (http://mjpeg.sourceforge.net/MacOS/). DivX encoding and DVD decoding relies on external mencoder component from http://sourceforge.net/projects/mplayerosx/. You can convert DVD, DivX and .mov files to DivX, VCD, CVD, SVCD and DVD. Includes bitrate calculators, a mpeg splitter for multiple CD burning, and other mpeg tools. Includes support for DVD subtitles decoding. When encoding to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 it can author the video as VCD or XVCD (.bin/.cue files for burning with Toast by dropping the .bin into VCD window) or as SVCD, CVD or XSVCD (two .img files to be burned in Toast under Multitrack XA window), or as DVD (/DVD/ folder to be burned in Toast DVD mode and .img file in UDF format for burning in Disk Image app or Toast disk image mode).

What's new in this version:

  • Updated to ffmpeg CVS of Jan 11, 2003, including faster Altivec optimizations.
  • Added "mplayer decode" option for SVCD/DVD encoding. It will force use of mplayer to decode the input video, hopefully fixing NTSC audio sync problems like the "quicktime decode" option already did, but also allowing for direct DVD input and enabling subtitles (very slow for now, doesn't fully support .mov input but AVI, VOB, mpeg and direct DVD). You have now three methods to encode to SVCD/DVD. The first one, fastest, is activated by deselecting both "QT decode" and "mplayer decode", uses mpeg2dec or ffmpeg to decode and is suited to PAL material and non-variable framerate VOBs. The second one, activated with the "QT Decode" flag, is also pretty quick and uses Quicktime to decode, and solves most sync issues with NTSC material. The third one, activated with the "mplayer decode" flag, uses mplayer to decode, provides in addition subtitles encoding and direct DVD input but is real slow (like 4 times slower than encoding DVD to DivX with mencoder). It's probably worth using it only when SVCD subtitles are needed (also prefer 0SEx to direct DVD input so as to avoid keeping the DVD running for a long time). This option need install of mplayer (use the ffmpegX engines installer).
  • Added the "ffmpegX engines installer" application. Use it to install the three external components doing the actual mpeg encoding and dvd reading (mpeg2enc, mencoder, mplayer). These components are not distributed with ffmpegX to comply with applicable laws and licensing terms and so they need to be downloaded from their distribution sites and installed. Simply run the installer application once and follow the instructions.
  • Includes a new version of movtoy4m fixing a bug which caused duplicated frames in .mov to VCD/SVCD conversion and decoding (thanks Johan Lindström).
  • Added drop-down menu in the "Open.." field for selection of a disk device name for DVD input.
  • Added chapter start-end selection in the video tab, to allow encoding only part of a DVD or VOB title (useful e.g. to pre-split for multiple CD burning by encoding only half of the movie).
  • Added verbose output when encoding 5 seconds test clip in DivX preset. This will print out: a) the crop values to be entered in the WHXY crop fields (check Terminal for the following output: [cropdetect] Allocating mp_image_t, 720x576x12bpp YUV planar, 622080 byte crop area: X: 11..716 Y: 75..501 (-vop crop=704:426:12:76) the values to be entered are the four numbers following -vop crop (704, 426, 12, 76 in this case) b) (DVD input) the list of available subtitle languages and their ID number [open] subtitle ( sid ): 0 language: en [open] subtitle ( sid ): 1 language: fr [open] subtitle ( sid ): 2 language: nl [open] subtitle ( sid ): 3 language: ar the value to be entered in the "Encode Subtitles #" field (in the audio tab) is the number 0-N following (sid): in the list. For input from a VOB ripped with 0SEx, the value to be entered is the one shown by 0SEx for the subtitle track included in the VOB less 1, eg if you ripped subtitle 3 you must set "Encode subtitles #" to 2. c) (DVD input) the list of available audio language streams and their ID numbers: [open] audio stream: 0 audio format: ac3 (5.1) language: en aid: 128 [open] audio stream: 1 audio format: ac3 (5.1) language: fr aid: 129 [open] number of audio channels on disk: 2. the value to be entered in the "Audio track" field is 1-N in the order of the available streams. For input from a VOB ripped with 0SEx, the "Audio track" value is the one shown by 0SEx for the audio track included in the VOB, eg if you ripped stream 2 you must set "Audio track" to 2.
  • The "Encode 5 seconds test clip" starts from minute 1:00 of playing to avoid initial black or title image with incorrect crop size.
  • SVCD and VCD authoring now also generates the .toc file (needed if you burn with MMB instead of Toast).
  • Fixed various bugs from 0.0.5.

Ok. So for everyone who hates this program because you can't get libraries installed here's how you do it. It'll tell you to download some files. Do it. First go to this page: http://mjpeg.sourceforge.net/MacOS/ and scroll down until you see the file named mpeg2enc.intel under the heading: "Notes for the mjpegtools on MAC OS/X". It'll be one of the last files on the page. So you grabbed that right? Control Click it and click download linked file. Rawk. Done with that.

Now there's the second link. The one with the zip file right. (http://voxel.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/mplayerosx/ffmpegXbinaries20060307.zip <-that one) Type that link in exactly and it'll download. Unzip it. You'll now have 2 files. mencoder and mplayer. Wow. Woulda been nice to have them tell you to unzip it instead of just putting that it wants the zip. Try installing the zip. Yeah. It wont work. However, we'll now point that "locate" button to where you just unzipped. Fantastic! Now it works.

Close it and open it. No more screen right. But now you get a nag screen asking you to buy it. Seriously? I just spent 2 hours troubleshooting your awesomely terrible instructions and you want me to buy it. No thanks. I'll pass. It seems like it'd be a great piece of software, but the instructions for the binaries was frustrating. And please don't tell me, "Why would you install the zip file?", because well, it's linux and there are programs that use the .tar.gz format for their plugins as the default install method so it only made sense that it would do the same.

So hope this helps someone less tech savvy. Again. The instructions for that part sucked.

ffmpegX Troubleshooting ReportHow I got the 3 components downloaded & installed - Version: 0.0.9y, 9/25/2008 10:49AM PST

'Twasn't simple, but I did finally get it all to work.

Firstly, for the mpeg2enc.intel component, one trick is that if you click the link & get a page of symbols, select all and "Save Page As" (under File) to your desktop & you will have the file. The additional trick for me then was that because it ends in ".intel" (which is not *exactly* what ffmpegX is looking for) it refused to accept the file. Delete the ".intel" from its name, and that one should be good to go.

Next, to get the mencoder and mplayer components, you can download them directly from here: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html (or link here: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MPlayer) go to the first group of downloads (Binary Codec Packages) and select a download http for your region and platform (in my case, Mac OS X x86 20060611/ in the US) -- note also: for me this worked when I selected to have the file automatically unzipped. In the resulting downloaded folder are the two components, mencoder and mplayer. Move them directly to your desktop.

Now, in ffmpegX (if needed, you can bring up the installation menu again from under ffmpgX>Install binaries) be sure to first enter your login password, or it won't let you locate anything. Then locate each of the above 3 components -- again, they should be all right on your desktop -- and voilá, they finally all should locate & install.

Took much searching and frustration, but at last success.

(Note too that apparently if you've managed to install components from previous attempts, and they didn't work, you'll need to uninstall them first -- use Spotlight -- not relevant in my case as I was unable to previously get anything to install) Good luck.

ffmpegX Troubleshooting ReportNeed Help burning .avi file to DVD - Version: 0.0.9y, 8/4/2008 11:02AM PST

august1stdevil
Hello,
i am a novice at this thing. I have captured a video clip form my old Sony Handycam using a usb device called EasyCAP, that does not have a digital out put. I did the original capture on a PC. When it captured the video it saved it in file with .avi extension. I am able to view the video on my PC using windows media player, but can't hear the sound. But when I burn it into a DVD from PC it gives a black screen with sound. I really don't care for the sound, I just need the video. So i thought if i tried burning the DVD via a MAC might solve the problem. When i transfered the file to my MAC it opens the file in quicktime and i can only hear the audio but no video... I tried burning it but still no luck it gives me a green screen now with sound.
so my question here is that can i use this app to solve my issue?
thanks
