Product Description:
ffmpegX is a Mac OS X GUI to ffmpeg the "hyper fast video and audio encoder" (http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net/). This GUI provides quick encoding to DivX, XviD, AVC/h.264, VCD, SVCD, CVD, DVD, 3GP, DV, MP4, MP4 for Sony PSP, MOV, mp2, mp3, AAC & AC3. MPEG-2 encoding relies on mpeg2enc component from the mjpegtools package (http://mjpeg.sourceforge.net/MacOS/). DivX and XviD encoding and subtitles support relies on external mencoder component from http://sourceforge.net/projects/mplayerosx/. Includes bitrate calculators, a mpeg and DivX splitter for multiple CD burning, and other mpeg tools, including svcd to dvd converter and dvd to 4GB dvd compressor. Includes support for VOB subtitles encoding, DVD selectable subtitles, as well as SubRip, MicroDVD, SubRip, SubViewer, Sami, VPlayer, RT, SSA, AQTitle, JACOsub and MPsubt subtitles. When encoding to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 it can author the video as VCD or XVCD (.bin/.cue files for burning with Toast by dropping the .bin into VCD window) or as SVCD, CVD or K/XSVCD (two .img files to be burned in Toast under Multitrack XA window), or as DVD (/DVD/ folder to be burned in Toast DVD mode and .img file in UDF format for burning in Disk Image app or Toast disk image mode).
What's new in this version:
- Added new MP4 H.264 quick preset for encoding with oustanding quality to the H.264 Advanced Video Codec (mpeg-4 part 10), and AAC sound, in a MP4 container fully compatible with Quicktime 7. Supports VIDEO_TS input and all mencoder features (subtitles, etc). Please note: AVI h.264 has been discontinued, because it is highly unstandard to use H264 into AVI, and its previous availability was only experimental. Please note: PSP H.264 uses a non-standard muxing profile and will be added later to the available encoding formats.
- Added support of PSP non-standard resolutions (for use with 16:9 sources): mainly 368x208, as well as 416x176, 320x176, 384x160, 480x160 and 400x192. Note that the PSP screen has a resolution of 480x272, but for movie playback, width x height must not exceed 76800 pixels, so the smaller sizes listed above have to be used. Note that no matter the non-standard resolution used, the picture will be always scaled to the full 16:9 PSP screen size, so if your source is 2.35;1 you must prior reverse it to 16:9 by using black bars. For 4:3 sources, always use the standard 320x240 resolution. To gain a little quality if you don't mind for the bigger filesize, you may use a video bitrate of 400 kbps.
- Fixed display bug in ffmpegX Progress.
- The installer is now compatible with 10.4 Tiger.
- New "Tools" tab. Each tool has now its own view for easier operations and more room for additional options.
- The "Open in Terminal Window" and "Keep Elementary Streams" option have been moved in the ffmpegX menu in the Apple bar.
- The "Author as DVD/SVCD/VCD" and "Split in N chunks" options for ffmpeg and mpeg2enc post-processing have been moved in the Options tab.
- Prescanning of VIDEO_TS folders is now instantaneous.
- Added "ME Function" option for H.264 encoding. Sets the comparison function used for fullpixel motion estimation (affects quality). Available values: Diamond search (fastest), Hexagon search (default), Uneven multi-hexagon, Exhaustive search (very slow).
- Support for new source formats with newer versions of the binaries, including QT7 H.264, Ogg, Vorbis, VP3, FPS1, Theora, Alac.
- Added a smaller subtitle font size value of 0.
- Added simplified chinese subtitle font (STHeiti).
- Added new autosize values of 16:9, 1.85:1 and 2.35:1 "keeping horizontal size", allowing for the maximum possible quality in case of anamorphic 16:9 DVDs (eg. you'll keep all vertical resolution and increase width, instead of keeping width and decreasing horizontal resolution).
- Fixed encoding issues for some .rm files previously resulting in a bus error.
- Crop information is now included in user-saved presets.
- When manually editing the image width or height, 'best' bitrate is automatically re-computed.
- The "Fix" tool for doctoring AVI files now runs in the Progress window.
- Fixed preview for mpeg-2 encoding with 'Normalize' enabled.
- Fixed encoding to ffmpeg mpeg-2 with ntsc-film framerate (previously forcing ntsc).
- Some improvements to better support running on a japanese OSX.
- Fixed various bugs from 0.0.9s.
- Updated to mplayer/mencoder CVS of Aug 14, 2005.
- Updated to ffmpeg CVS of Aug 14, 2005.
- Updated to h.264 x264 rev285 of Aug 10, 2005.
- Updated to XviD CVS of Aug 10, 2005.

- To playback mpeg-2, use VLC, mplayer or the Apple QT MPEG-2 playback component
- To playback MP4 H264, use QT 7
- To comply with applicable laws and licensing terms, the mpeg2enc, mplayer and mencoder components must be downloaded and installed separately by using the installer application which comes with ffmpegX. To comply with copyright laws, ffmpegX doesn't allow to select a DVD device as input and doesn't contain any DVD decryption software

'Twasn't simple, but I did finally get it all to work.
Firstly, for the mpeg2enc.intel component, one trick is that if you click the link & get a page of symbols, select all and "Save Page As" (under File) to your desktop & you will have the file. The additional trick for me then was that because it ends in ".intel" (which is not *exactly* what ffmpegX is looking for) it refused to accept the file. Delete the ".intel" from its name, and that one should be good to go.
Next, to get the mencoder and mplayer components, you can download them directly from here: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html (or link here: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MPlayer) go to the first group of downloads (Binary Codec Packages) and select a download http for your region and platform (in my case, Mac OS X x86 20060611/ in the US) -- note also: for me this worked when I selected to have the file automatically unzipped. In the resulting downloaded folder are the two components, mencoder and mplayer. Move them directly to your desktop.
Now, in ffmpegX (if needed, you can bring up the installation menu again from under ffmpgX>Install binaries) be sure to first enter your login password, or it won't let you locate anything. Then locate each of the above 3 components -- again, they should be all right on your desktop -- and voilá, they finally all should locate & install.
Took much searching and frustration, but at last success.
(Note too that apparently if you've managed to install components from previous attempts, and they didn't work, you'll need to uninstall them first -- use Spotlight -- not relevant in my case as I was unable to previously get anything to install) Good luck.

Need Help burning .avi file to DVD - Version: 0.0.9y, 8/4/2008 11:02AM PST

Hello,
i am a novice at this thing. I have captured a video clip form my old Sony Handycam using a usb device called EasyCAP, that does not have a digital out put. I did the original capture on a PC. When it captured the video it saved it in file with .avi extension. I am able to view the video on my PC using windows media player, but can't hear the sound. But when I burn it into a DVD from PC it gives a black screen with sound. I really don't care for the sound, I just need the video. So i thought if i tried burning the DVD via a MAC might solve the problem. When i transfered the file to my MAC it opens the file in quicktime and i can only hear the audio but no video... I tried burning it but still no luck it gives me a green screen now with sound.
so my question here is that can i use this app to solve my issue?

Now there's the second link. The one with the zip file right. (http://voxel.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/mplayerosx/ffmpegXbinaries20060307.zip <-that one) Type that link in exactly and it'll download. Unzip it. You'll now have 2 files. mencoder and mplayer. Wow. Woulda been nice to have them tell you to unzip it instead of just putting that it wants the zip. Try installing the zip. Yeah. It wont work. However, we'll now point that "locate" button to where you just unzipped. Fantastic! Now it works.
Close it and open it. No more screen right. But now you get a nag screen asking you to buy it. Seriously? I just spent 2 hours troubleshooting your awesomely terrible instructions and you want me to buy it. No thanks. I'll pass. It seems like it'd be a great piece of software, but the instructions for the binaries was frustrating. And please don't tell me, "Why would you install the zip file?", because well, it's linux and there are programs that use the .tar.gz format for their plugins as the default install method so it only made sense that it would do the same.
So hope this helps someone less tech savvy. Again. The instructions for that part sucked.
