Product Description:

ffmpegX is a Mac OS X GUI to ffmpeg the "hyper fast video and audio encoder" (http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net/). This GUI provides quick encoding to DivX, XviD, AVC/h.264, VCD, SVCD, CVD, DVD, 3GP, DV, MP4, MP4 for Sony PSP, MOV, mp2, mp3, AAC & AC3. MPEG-2 encoding relies on mpeg2enc component from the mjpegtools package (http://mjpeg.sourceforge.net/MacOS/). DivX and XviD encoding and subtitles support relies on external mencoder component from http://sourceforge.net/projects/mplayerosx/. Includes bitrate calculators, a mpeg and DivX splitter for multiple CD burning, and other mpeg tools, including svcd to dvd converter and dvd to 4GB dvd compressor. Includes support for VOB subtitles encoding, DVD selectable subtitles, as well as SubRip, MicroDVD, SubRip, SubViewer, Sami, VPlayer, RT, SSA, AQTitle, JACOsub and MPsubt subtitles. When encoding to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 it can author the video as VCD or XVCD (.bin/.cue files for burning with Toast by dropping the .bin into VCD window) or as SVCD, CVD or K/XSVCD (two .img files to be burned in Toast under Multitrack XA window), or as DVD (/DVD/ folder to be burned in Toast DVD mode and .img file in UDF format for burning in Disk Image app or Toast disk image mode).

What's new in this version:

  • The new ffmpegX opening view is the "Summary" tab. It provides a quick and easy way to operate ffmpegX by simply dropping a file on the left, choosing a preset on the right, and clicking "Encode". The source and target formats are detailed in the "LCD-like" screens.
  • Added support of drag and drop of input files over the left "LCD" screen AND the Open.. field.
  • Autocrop is now also supported with ffmpeg engine.
  • Crop values are now always in TBLR format (top bottom left right) for both mencoder and ffmpeg engines. The needed conversions are now done internally and you do not longer need to convert between mencoder and ffmpeg crop formats.
  • Autocrop now autocrops AND previews, for faster checking of crop values (hit the Return key to stop the preview).
  • Fixed bug which caused wrong cropping values in recent releases.
  • Added normalize audio option in the audio tab. It analyzes the whole input audio track and automatically adjusts the volume for the best average value before encoding it, so as to avoid volume too low or clipping. Currently available with ffmpeg mpeg-2, ffmpeg mpeg-1, and mpeg2enc without "Decode with mplayer". (For mencoder engine DivX/XviD/h.264, you may still use the Audio "Gain" popup to manually adjust the encoded volume).
  • Added setting of subtitle size (Filters tab), for burning subtitles in DivX/XviD/h.264/mpeg1/2 or for creating DVD selectable subtitles with the specified font size. (Click the 'Play' button with a subtitle file loaded in the Filters tab to preview).
  • Added setting of subtitle font (Filters tab), for burning subtitles in DivX/XviD/h.264/mpeg1/2 or for creating DVD selectable subtitles with the specified font. Available fonts are a subset of the Apple fonts installed in OSX 10.3. Fonts for non-latin alphabets are available, like Chinese, Japanese, Cyrillic, Greek, etc. (Click the 'Play' button with a subtitle file loaded in the Filters tab to preview).
  • Added setting of subtitle text encoding (Filters tab), for burning subtitles in DivX/XviD/h.264/mpeg1/2 or for creating DVD selectable subtitles. Allow to use subtitle files with non-english characters sets. More than 60 choices are available to cover almost all possible cases. (Click the 'Play' button with a subtitle file loaded in the Filters tab to preview).
  • Added "PSP ffmpeg" quick preset to encode video suitable for playback on the Sony PSP. Sets the new "psp" ffmpeg profile. Please note that once converted to the special PSP profile, the files will be not readable by ffmpegX for converting back to another format. Also sets the particular file naming needed for PSP, and the name used internally to catalog the movies (to be entered in the "PSP name" field which will appear in the Options tab).
  • Added support of TiVo .ty files input for encoding with mencoder engine (to DivX, XviD, h.264), and with mpeg2enc engine and "Decode with mplayer" enabled (to mpeg-1, mpeg-2), as well as playback with the "Play" button.
  • Added support of TiVo .ty files demuxing with the "Demux" tool. Standard .m2v and .mp2 streams will be generated as output (you can then import them in DVDSP).
  • Added support of TiVo .ty files "Author as DVD" with the "Author" tool, to directly author them as VIDEO_TS folders without any re-encoding (audio is automatically resampled to 48Khz and elementary streams are kept, for any further processing in Sizzle or DVDSP).
  • Added b-frames option to mencoder h.264.
  • When encoding sources with AAC audio to ffmpeg mpeg-2, you may now avoid known ffmpeg memory leaks in decoding AAC audio, by enabling the "Normalize" option (now default in the presets). By doing so, Quicktime will be used to decode the audio, while ffmpeg will still be used to decode the video.
  • "Decode with mplayer" temp files are now created in the destination folder.
  • Better support of Quicktime files for ffmpeg engine.
  • Several bugfixes from 0.0.9r and better error handling.
  • Updated to mencoder CVS of Jan 23, 2005 (static build). This version improves VOB subtitle displaying and also fixes a bug which made XviD files impossible to open on PC.
  • Updated to ffmpeg CVS of Jan 6, 2005.
  • Updated to h.264 x264 rev104 of Jan 23, 2005.
  • Updated to XviD 1.1 CVS of Jan 23, 2005.

Ok. So for everyone who hates this program because you can't get libraries installed here's how you do it. It'll tell you to download some files. Do it. First go to this page: http://mjpeg.sourceforge.net/MacOS/ and scroll down until you see the file named mpeg2enc.intel under the heading: "Notes for the mjpegtools on MAC OS/X". It'll be one of the last files on the page. So you grabbed that right? Control Click it and click download linked file. Rawk. Done with that.

Now there's the second link. The one with the zip file right. (http://voxel.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/mplayerosx/ffmpegXbinaries20060307.zip <-that one) Type that link in exactly and it'll download. Unzip it. You'll now have 2 files. mencoder and mplayer. Wow. Woulda been nice to have them tell you to unzip it instead of just putting that it wants the zip. Try installing the zip. Yeah. It wont work. However, we'll now point that "locate" button to where you just unzipped. Fantastic! Now it works.

Close it and open it. No more screen right. But now you get a nag screen asking you to buy it. Seriously? I just spent 2 hours troubleshooting your awesomely terrible instructions and you want me to buy it. No thanks. I'll pass. It seems like it'd be a great piece of software, but the instructions for the binaries was frustrating. And please don't tell me, "Why would you install the zip file?", because well, it's linux and there are programs that use the .tar.gz format for their plugins as the default install method so it only made sense that it would do the same.

So hope this helps someone less tech savvy. Again. The instructions for that part sucked.

ffmpegX Troubleshooting ReportHow I got the 3 components downloaded & installed - Version: 0.0.9y, 9/25/2008 10:49AM PST

'Twasn't simple, but I did finally get it all to work.

Firstly, for the mpeg2enc.intel component, one trick is that if you click the link & get a page of symbols, select all and "Save Page As" (under File) to your desktop & you will have the file. The additional trick for me then was that because it ends in ".intel" (which is not *exactly* what ffmpegX is looking for) it refused to accept the file. Delete the ".intel" from its name, and that one should be good to go.

Next, to get the mencoder and mplayer components, you can download them directly from here: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html (or link here: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MPlayer) go to the first group of downloads (Binary Codec Packages) and select a download http for your region and platform (in my case, Mac OS X x86 20060611/ in the US) -- note also: for me this worked when I selected to have the file automatically unzipped. In the resulting downloaded folder are the two components, mencoder and mplayer. Move them directly to your desktop.

Now, in ffmpegX (if needed, you can bring up the installation menu again from under ffmpgX>Install binaries) be sure to first enter your login password, or it won't let you locate anything. Then locate each of the above 3 components -- again, they should be all right on your desktop -- and voilá, they finally all should locate & install.

Took much searching and frustration, but at last success.

(Note too that apparently if you've managed to install components from previous attempts, and they didn't work, you'll need to uninstall them first -- use Spotlight -- not relevant in my case as I was unable to previously get anything to install) Good luck.

ffmpegX Troubleshooting ReportNeed Help burning .avi file to DVD - Version: 0.0.9y, 8/4/2008 11:02AM PST

august1stdevil
Hello,
i am a novice at this thing. I have captured a video clip form my old Sony Handycam using a usb device called EasyCAP, that does not have a digital out put. I did the original capture on a PC. When it captured the video it saved it in file with .avi extension. I am able to view the video on my PC using windows media player, but can't hear the sound. But when I burn it into a DVD from PC it gives a black screen with sound. I really don't care for the sound, I just need the video. So i thought if i tried burning the DVD via a MAC might solve the problem. When i transfered the file to my MAC it opens the file in quicktime and i can only hear the audio but no video... I tried burning it but still no luck it gives me a green screen now with sound.
so my question here is that can i use this app to solve my issue?
thanks
