Product Description:

ffmpegX is a Mac OS X GUI to ffmpeg the "hyper fast video and audio encoder" (http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net/). It can decode MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 (aka DIVX4), non-encrypted VOB, AVI MS-MPEG4 V3 (aka DIVX 3), XviD, WAV, Real Audio, H263(+) (aka RealVideo 1.0), PGM, YUV, PPM, AC3, PCM8/16 bits, mulaw/Alaw, WMA, SUN AU format, MPEG audio layer 2, MPEG audio layer 3, MJPEG and even more formats. This GUI provides quick encoding to DivX, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MP2, MP3 & AC3. MPEG-2 encoding relies on mpeg2enc component from the mjpegtools package (http://mjpeg.sourceforge.net/MacOS/). DivX and XviD encoding and subtitles support relies on external mencoder component from http://sourceforge.net/projects/mplayerosx/. You can convert non-encrypted VOB, DivX and .mov files to DivX, VCD, CVD, SVCD and DVD. Includes bitrate calculators, a mpeg and DivX splitter for multiple CD burning, and other mpeg tools, including svcd to dvd converter and dvd to 4GB dvd compressor. Includes support for VOB subtitles encoding as well as SubRip, MicroDVD, SubRip, SubViewer, Sami, VPlayer, RT, SSA, AQTitle, JACOsub and MPsubt subtitles. When encoding to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 it can author the video as VCD or XVCD (.bin/.cue files for burning with Toast by dropping the .bin into VCD window) or as SVCD, CVD or K/XSVCD (two .img files to be burned in Toast under Multitrack XA window), or as DVD (/DVD/ folder to be burned in Toast DVD mode and .img file in UDF format for burning in Disk Image app or Toast disk image mode).

What's new in this version:

  • Intelligent automatic setting of NTSC/PAL framerate, image size and pulldown mode, depending on source movie analysis. This will greatly simplify the operating process: just selecting a quick preset should now be enough.
For example to encode an avi DivX file to SVCD, all you have to do is now just:
    • drop the source file onto the application icon (or open it with the Open... button),
    • select SVCD quick preset,
    • hit encode.

For example to encode a VIDEO_TS folder to XviD, all you have to do is now just:
    • drop the VIDEO_TS folder onto the application icon,
    • select XviD quick preset,
    • hit encode.
  • New "Information" line at the top of the window. It will always read in this format:
VIDEO: DivX, size:480x576, NTSC FILM (23.976) w/3:2 pulldown, 7500 kbps - AUDIO: mp3, 44100Hz, 96 kbps. The information is selectable so as you can also copy/paste it.
  • There are no longer PAL and NTSC versions of each Quick preset and of each "autosize" image format. PAL/NTSC image size mode is now set automatically based on the current framerate.
  • Added new default postprocessing split in "Auto" chunks mode for mpeg2enc encoding and for the mux as.. tool (will be implemented later for ffmpeg encoding), which will cut the stream as needed when CD media size is exceeded (as specified in the bitrate calculator CD media type popup: eg. "80 min mode-2", "74 min mode-1", etc, OR (whichever is smaller) as specified by a size in MB as manually entered in the size field of the bitrate calculator, eg. "100 MB"). Authoring to VCD or SVCD can be automatically applied to resulting chunks.
  • Operating mode of "Decode with Quicktime" (for VCD/SVCD/CVD/DVD/KVCD/KDVD encoding) is now exteded to any input formats (it was limited to Quicktime .mov files and VOB files before). Eg. if your input file is an .avi DivX file, Quicktime decoding will now also apply, and you will no longer need to use DivX Doctor II. When using "Decode with Quicktime" you must make sure that your input file can be opened in Quicktime Player, or the encoding will fail (eg. you must have the codecs to read it, like divx.com and 3ivx.com codecs to read .avi DivX, or QT mpeg-2 player codec to read VOB files). If you don't want to decode with Quicktime or don't have codecs for a specific format, disable "Decode with Quicktime" in the Options tab, so as ffmpeg will be used to read the source, or enable "Decode with mplayer", so as mplayer will be used to read the source.
  • Improved "fast-mpeg1" preset for VCD encoding. Encoding options, muxing process, splitting process and authoring process have been optimized to improve DVD player compliance. Please note that "fast-mpeg1" ffmpeg engine always encodes in variable bitrate mode, which is non-standard for VCD, so some players will not handle such streams. But if your player accepts them, consider preferring this mode for VCD encoding, as this is one of the fastest and best quality mpeg-1 encoders currently available on all platforms.
  • File extension is automatically added at encoding time to the destination filename if it is missing or wrong (eg .mpg, .avi).
  • Destination field is automatically set by default with the same path as the source field.
  • Source file field is no longer editable in order to enforce autoscanning requirements on selected source. To open a source file, you now need either to drag and drop its icon to the application icon, or click "Open.." to locate it. The source field is still selectable, so you can copy and paste its contents.
  • More bugfixes from 0.0.8d.
  • Proofreading of german localization by Andreas Gfeller.

Ok. So for everyone who hates this program because you can't get libraries installed here's how you do it. It'll tell you to download some files. Do it. First go to this page: http://mjpeg.sourceforge.net/MacOS/ and scroll down until you see the file named mpeg2enc.intel under the heading: "Notes for the mjpegtools on MAC OS/X". It'll be one of the last files on the page. So you grabbed that right? Control Click it and click download linked file. Rawk. Done with that.

Now there's the second link. The one with the zip file right. (http://voxel.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/mplayerosx/ffmpegXbinaries20060307.zip <-that one) Type that link in exactly and it'll download. Unzip it. You'll now have 2 files. mencoder and mplayer. Wow. Woulda been nice to have them tell you to unzip it instead of just putting that it wants the zip. Try installing the zip. Yeah. It wont work. However, we'll now point that "locate" button to where you just unzipped. Fantastic! Now it works.

Close it and open it. No more screen right. But now you get a nag screen asking you to buy it. Seriously? I just spent 2 hours troubleshooting your awesomely terrible instructions and you want me to buy it. No thanks. I'll pass. It seems like it'd be a great piece of software, but the instructions for the binaries was frustrating. And please don't tell me, "Why would you install the zip file?", because well, it's linux and there are programs that use the .tar.gz format for their plugins as the default install method so it only made sense that it would do the same.

So hope this helps someone less tech savvy. Again. The instructions for that part sucked.

ffmpegX Troubleshooting ReportHow I got the 3 components downloaded & installed - Version: 0.0.9y, 9/25/2008 10:49AM PST

'Twasn't simple, but I did finally get it all to work.

Firstly, for the mpeg2enc.intel component, one trick is that if you click the link & get a page of symbols, select all and "Save Page As" (under File) to your desktop & you will have the file. The additional trick for me then was that because it ends in ".intel" (which is not *exactly* what ffmpegX is looking for) it refused to accept the file. Delete the ".intel" from its name, and that one should be good to go.

Next, to get the mencoder and mplayer components, you can download them directly from here: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html (or link here: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MPlayer) go to the first group of downloads (Binary Codec Packages) and select a download http for your region and platform (in my case, Mac OS X x86 20060611/ in the US) -- note also: for me this worked when I selected to have the file automatically unzipped. In the resulting downloaded folder are the two components, mencoder and mplayer. Move them directly to your desktop.

Now, in ffmpegX (if needed, you can bring up the installation menu again from under ffmpgX>Install binaries) be sure to first enter your login password, or it won't let you locate anything. Then locate each of the above 3 components -- again, they should be all right on your desktop -- and voilá, they finally all should locate & install.

Took much searching and frustration, but at last success.

(Note too that apparently if you've managed to install components from previous attempts, and they didn't work, you'll need to uninstall them first -- use Spotlight -- not relevant in my case as I was unable to previously get anything to install) Good luck.

ffmpegX Troubleshooting ReportNeed Help burning .avi file to DVD - Version: 0.0.9y, 8/4/2008 11:02AM PST

august1stdevil
Hello,
i am a novice at this thing. I have captured a video clip form my old Sony Handycam using a usb device called EasyCAP, that does not have a digital out put. I did the original capture on a PC. When it captured the video it saved it in file with .avi extension. I am able to view the video on my PC using windows media player, but can't hear the sound. But when I burn it into a DVD from PC it gives a black screen with sound. I really don't care for the sound, I just need the video. So i thought if i tried burning the DVD via a MAC might solve the problem. When i transfered the file to my MAC it opens the file in quicktime and i can only hear the audio but no video... I tried burning it but still no luck it gives me a green screen now with sound.
so my question here is that can i use this app to solve my issue?
thanks
