ffmpegX ReviewGreat program. Shitty instructions. - Version: 0.0.9y, 12/21/2008 01:06PM PST

Ok. So for everyone who hates this program because you can't get libraries installed here's how you do it. It'll tell you to download some files. Do it. First go to this page: http://mjpeg.sourceforge.net/MacOS/ and scroll down until you see the file named mpeg2enc.intel under the heading: "Notes for the mjpegtools on MAC OS/X". It'll be one of the last files on the page. So you grabbed that right? Control Click it and click download linked file. Rawk. Done with that.

Now there's the second link. The one with the zip file right. (http://voxel.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/mplayerosx/ffmpegXbinaries20060307.zip <-that one) Type that link in exactly and it'll download. Unzip it. You'll now have 2 files. mencoder and mplayer. Wow. Woulda been nice to have them tell you to unzip it instead of just putting that it wants the zip. Try installing the zip. Yeah. It wont work. However, we'll now point that "locate" button to where you just unzipped. Fantastic! Now it works.

Close it and open it. No more screen right. But now you get a nag screen asking you to buy it. Seriously? I just spent 2 hours troubleshooting your awesomely terrible instructions and you want me to buy it. No thanks. I'll pass. It seems like it'd be a great piece of software, but the instructions for the binaries was frustrating. And please don't tell me, "Why would you install the zip file?", because well, it's linux and there are programs that use the .tar.gz format for their plugins as the default install method so it only made sense that it would do the same.

So hope this helps someone less tech savvy. Again. The instructions for that part sucked.

ffmpegX Troubleshooting ReportHow I got the 3 components downloaded & installed - Version: 0.0.9y, 9/25/2008 10:49AM PST

JennieJ
'Twasn't simple, but I did finally get it all to work.

Firstly, for the mpeg2enc.intel component, one trick is that if you click the link & get a page of symbols, select all and "Save Page As" (under File) to your desktop & you will have the file. The additional trick for me then was that because it ends in ".intel" (which is not *exactly* what ffmpegX is looking for) it refused to accept the file. Delete the ".intel" from its name, and that one should be good to go.

Next, to get the mencoder and mplayer components, you can download them directly from here: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html (or link here: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MPlayer) go to the first group of downloads (Binary Codec Packages) and select a download http for your region and platform (in my case, Mac OS X x86 20060611/ in the US) -- note also: for me this worked when I selected to have the file automatically unzipped. In the resulting downloaded folder are the two components, mencoder and mplayer. Move them directly to your desktop.

Now, in ffmpegX (if needed, you can bring up the installation menu again from under ffmpgX>Install binaries) be sure to first enter your login password, or it won't let you locate anything. Then locate each of the above 3 components -- again, they should be all right on your desktop -- and voilá, they finally all should locate & install.

Took much searching and frustration, but at last success.

(Note too that apparently if you've managed to install components from previous attempts, and they didn't work, you'll need to uninstall them first -- use Spotlight -- not relevant in my case as I was unable to previously get anything to install) Good luck.

ffmpegX Troubleshooting ReportNeed Help burning .avi file to DVD - Version: 0.0.9y, 8/4/2008 11:02AM PST

august1stdevil
Hello,
i am a novice at this thing. I have captured a video clip form my old Sony Handycam using a usb device called EasyCAP, that does not have a digital out put. I did the original capture on a PC. When it captured the video it saved it in file with .avi extension. I am able to view the video on my PC using windows media player, but can't hear the sound. But when I burn it into a DVD from PC it gives a black screen with sound. I really don't care for the sound, I just need the video. So i thought if i tried burning the DVD via a MAC might solve the problem. When i transfered the file to my MAC it opens the file in quicktime and i can only hear the audio but no video... I tried burning it but still no luck it gives me a green screen now with sound.
so my question here is that can i use this app to solve my issue?
thanks

ffmpegX ReviewPowerful Encoder That Re-encoded a Bad Video - Version: 0.0.9y, 8/1/2008 09:39PM PST

vitoarc
I had downloaded this funky mp4 video that was encoded with x264. The only thing that would play the vid was VLC, but even VLC was spotty, where sometimes the video would drop or just plain freeze. This file was was pretty mucked up from whoever encoded it using x264.

I tried to re-encode the video with MPEG Streamclip, and for the first time ever, Streamclip was unable to open a file for me (said it wasn't recognized).

I then turned to ffmpegX. I was able to open the file, and then re-encode it to an mpeg4 in an AVI container. The video plays beautifully now using VLC and the double pass quality that I used for encoding looks superb. The encoding was very very fast as well.

This is soon to become my favorite encoder, but I still like and will continue to use MPEG Streamclip. There's an excellent forum dedicated to this encoder as well.

ffmpegX ReviewThis is good - but won't create Real .flv files - Version: 0.0.9y, 7/18/2008 06:23AM PST

macwoman
After you install the app along with the two lots of extra required files, this application is great.

The big use for me is to convert DVD video files (VOB) to Quicktime mp4 files.

However, this application will not convert to Real .flv format.

Hope they will fix this soon.

Does anyone know a reliable shareware app that will convert to Real .flv format?

ffmpegX ReviewSTILL can't download mpeg2enc!!! - Version: 0.0.9y, 7/1/2008 06:50AM PST

vitoarc
I'm using PPC, so I need mpeg2enc from sourceforge, but every time I r-click to download it, or option-click to download the file, I get a blank document. This apparently has been going on for YEARS! A search on sourceforge shows that in July 2005, someone posted the following:

>>>"I cannot download the mpeg2enc for MacX from your website. I've
done it 3 times and all that gets downloaded is a blank document. I
need the mpeg2enc so I can run ffmpegX. Please help!!!"

The response was this:

>>> "Did you press the option key (labled with ALT) on the
keyboard when klicking the link ? It worked that way in Safari on OSX 10.3.x and 10.4.x"

That was it, STATUS CLOSED!

What else is nuts is that I am using a PPC, yet the ffmpeg application keeps asking me to install mpeg2enc.intel

SOMETHING IS VERY WRONG HERE AND NOBODY SEEMS TO BE ADDRESSING IT

ffmpegX ReviewExcellent if you know what you are doing... - Version: 0.0.9y, 6/6/2008 07:15PM PST

This is a great application once you get all the facts. It is hands down the best of its kind. I use it in conjunction with Toast to create DVDs. It has problems converting poorly encoded files, but otherwise does the trick without fail.

ffmpegX Troubleshooting ReportHow to convert AVI to Video_ts files? - Version: 0.0.9y, 6/2/2008 12:16PM PST

sadepussycat
I realize this is a really stupid question for those who are very familiar with this software and for that, I apologize in advance. I cannot figure this out. I have tried converting AVI files to DVD formats and still cannot find any video_ts files which I can burn and play on my DVD player. I have an old player and unfortunately it's not as sophisticated as the newer ones that can play AVI files.

If anybody can direct me to what exactly I need to set the target format to and where to get these TS files, I would really appreciate it.

ffmpegX CommentaryDoesn't work - Version: 0.0.9y, 4/10/2008 07:51AM PST

pskovacs
Every time I start this app it asks to download the mpeg2enc.intel when I don't have an Intel Mac. Also, every time I try to encode, I get a message asking me for Progress.app.

This application is not helpful, nor intuitive at all.

Anyone have a better alternative for converting vid files?

ffmpegX ReviewDeveloper Lost Interest - Version: 0.0.9y, 2/15/2008 12:00AM PST

Seems like the developer has lost interest in the great program. This is the first update in about a year and there are several issues with this new version that haven't been addressed
