FileInfo Reviewbugged - Version: 1.3, 1/14/2008 03:30PM PST

I've used the 1.2 version for some time and been happy with it. I tried version 1.3 on a file (using OS X 10.4.11 on a G5) and got a weird error message: "Can't make current application into type <<class imaA>>"

Quick Change 3.0 worked fine for me and it is free.

FileInfo ReviewUseful Little App! - Version: 1.3, 12/17/2005 01:17AM PST

I have used FileTyper for years, even in Classic mode under 10.3.9 on a G3! However, I have also been on the lookout for an OSX native replacement for FileTyper, to give me another good reason to no longer have to install OS9. I am happy to say that FileInfo just about makes the grade. I am going to keep FileInfo in my dock, but the ONLY thing that keeps me from relying solely upon it, is the fact that it doesn't have the option to make files visible or invisible. Developer, if you still have an interest in working on this app, will you please consider adding this functionality? Thanks!

Worked great for changing creator and type codes. Had no problem using it to see the codes for existing files. Can't beat the price! This is also great because ResEdit, my old standby for this sort of thing, isn't working right under 10.3. It gives me an error message that the creator and type codes I put in are longer than four characters even though this is not the case.

Felix01, the reason you're seeing ????'s is that OS X programs rarely (never?) use the old Creator/Type code system. If you open up a file made by an OS 9 program you'll see the codes there.

Rumor sites suggest OS X 10.4 will have some kind of new metadata sytem which would be nice. OS X was a step back in this respect.

FileInfo CommentaryWill it tell me file types/creators? - Version: 1.1, 11/5/2003 10:39AM PST

From the ReadMe: "You can drag documents from your favorite applications to FileInfo to find out what types and creators they use." Every file I've tried this with just shows question marks in the Type and Creator windows. Is this a feature you expect to add in the future or am I using the app incorrectly? Based on the above, I think the superb XRay will continue to be the choice for my needs...although it's not freeware. Note: Tried with files it should recognize like TTXT, XCEL, PPT3, MSWD, etc.

FileInfo ReviewGreat, simple and… - Version: 1.0, 10/28/2002 01:57AM PST

fast. The best of the bunch for batch processing of files. I just dragged 500+ .html files (from the 10.2 Finder search results) and changed creator to Navigator instead of Explorer or Dreamweaver - the same process takes ages in FileType or MuchoFileInfo and ends up stalling or crashing the Finder, while with File Info it's a lot quicker and completely stable. It doesn't even stall the Finder at all (no beachballs spinning). On the other hand, FileInfo could do with a very useful feature that MuchoFile and FileType have: allowing users to add more file types and creators to the default lists.
