I have experience of MYOB top of the range software in Europe. Apart from the criticism of their support as mentioned by other reviewers, I think it is necessary for prospective users to be aware of my concerns about some other aspects of how some of MYOB software works. Although I have not used this particular version, I sharing my experience with another of MYOB programmes for those who may be interested to know.
I have used the top-of-the-range version of MYOB for many years. It has several undeniable strengths.
BUT if you do not belong to MYOB's own network of accountants, you should be very careful for two reasons before buying it. First that the upgrade costs and policies of MYOB are worse than almost any other company or developer in my experience. Second that completely on a random basis MYOB will seek to verify your registration with its website. Apart from being an intrusive, annoying invasion of privacy, I don't know what data about you it sends to MYOB or what the software would do if you did not have the internet connection just at time the MYOB wanted to check your licence. Would you loose all your data? Would you be able to continue your work if you can not establish contact with MYOB over a weekend or holiday? How would their less than the best support system cope with your difficulty?
New users should purchase at their own risk because more expereinced ones would know about the above situation.
There are many accounting products available for small businesses and non-MYOB network affiliated accountants.

MYOB FirstEdge ReviewIt gets the job done, well - Version: 3.0, 7/11/2008 10:26AM PST

This is really a pretty good product. I used Quickbooks for ten years or so, then just grew weary of all the errors it generated. Looked at MoneyWorks, which gets rave reviews, but it was too expensive and not intuitive at all for me. First Edge is also not too intuitive; this is why so many complaints. But they do offer free support for 3 months. Not a lot, but it is enough if you use the program and just ask your questions. And, the more I use FE, the better I like it. It does what I need to do. I especially like the fact that I can process credit cards directly through the software. It saves me a lot of time. I also bought a book out of New Zealand, called Making the Most of MYOB, through www.alibris.com. It is not all relevant, but is still a good resource. And there are no errors. I've only had one weird thing happen, and it did not affect data--it was just that the format for check printing changed, and the program gave me an error message that let me know. So it is a bit slow to learn, but it is also pretty rock solid. I give it 4 stars, considering its competition. Don't let all the complaining reviews put you off. If you take the time to learn the program, I think you will be satisfied. And you can try it free as a demo.

I've been using MYOB Firstedge for about 3 years now for my one-man graphic design studio. I'm still on version 1, because I have seen nothing worthwhile in the new versions.

The Good: the app is stable and dependable. I've never lost any data. And, you never have to hit "Save". You're entries are automatically recorded. It's also smaller and less bloated than Quickbooks, which is better for my small business. And much cheaper. The app comes with a pretty decent "Accounting 101" instruction manual to teach the uninitiated about basic accounting terms and techniques. The invoicing and estimating forms are fairly flexible.

The Bad: The navigation is HORRENDOUSLY bad! I absolutely hate using this product for that reason alone. it makes me sick every time I launch it.

It's impossible to find what you need (I have to keep a cheat-sheet by my computer to remember how to do my most frequent tasks.) And, unlike in Quickbooks, the windows don't stay where you've left them when you quit. Also, there is NO job log, notes feature or time tracking for recording a project's progress. Also, in previous versions, the "import" feature was useless. Not sure if it's gotten any better in v3.

I've tried Quickbooks and many other shareware products, but I haven't found anything that is both easy to use and fully functional. Including MYOB's products. But Firstedge is, unfortunately, the LEAST bad of the bunch, I think. So I'm stuck with it until something better comes along.
