Product Description:

Doggiebox is a versatile drum machine for Mac OS X that empowers you to create and manipulate percussion-based accompaniment tracks in minutes, ranging from the realism of a human drummer on a full kit to imaginitively bizarre experimental pieces.
Here's a sampling of some of the things you can do with Doggiebox today:
  • create and modify drum tracks of unlimited length, with zoomable granularity from one beat per bar down to 64th notes, using a flexible yet intuitive interface
  • specify tempo and time signature changes (including compound time) over arbitrary bars in a song
  • create and modify your own drum kits, including an unlimited range of instrument types (e.g. drums, cymbals, accessories) and variants, including their actual sounds and visual representation
  • copy groups of bars between song files, even if those songs each use a different drum kit
  • play a song using different drum kits with the simplicity of automated drum kit matching (compare the included "real drum kit" with the "voice simulated drums")
  • mark off song sections, such as verses and choruses, in a separate scrolling list for easy navigation and management

What's new in this version:

  • Vastly optimized display mechanisms in the pattern editor, so that responsiveness to mouse tracking and clicking is markedly improved.
  • Fixed problems using 3/8, 5/8 time signatures.
  • Improved control over tempo specification; it is now possible to specify the tempo in terms of any base note value via a pop-up menu in the bar properties dialog.
  • Improved zooming function so that it's now possible to add and modify triplets within individual beat positions simply by zooming in.
  • Fixed bug where the drum info controls in the Drum Kit Editor would sometimes be greyed out, in particular after adding a new drum.
  • Up and down cursor keys now move the insertion point to the beginning and end of song, respectively.
  • Fixed cosmetic issue where bar numbers of 100 or greater were truncated (only the first two digits would appear).
  • Fixed some major memory leaks which would sometimes result in memory used by drum kits and songs not to be deallocated when a song was closed.
  • Improved error handling when opening corrupt files or those that are created with subsequent (too-new) versions of Doggiebox.

Doggiebox ReviewEven Better - Version: 1.2, 9/14/2004 06:35AM PST

A great piece of software that keeps getting better. You can get a basic drum pattern worked out in next to no time - getting a full song is dead easy even for this total non-drummer. I started using this softwre about 12 months ago, and since then I have not even plugged in my Korg.

If this is all that recommended it, it would still be a good buy, but the best part of the experience is the service that is given to the users. Bug fixes are usually done the next day (some on the same day). Suggestions for improvements, changes are listened to and actioned on.

I see a previous poster has said that it crashed 3 times. If this happens, try e-mailing the developer, I can't guarantee it, but I would have a punt that the crash would be fixed PDQ.

One of the best pieces of software I have ever purchased.

One of the advantages of purchasing software from a smaller company is that you get unparalleled access to the developer. In some cases, you can actually influence the product and it's feature set. Such is the case with Zygoat and Doggiebox.

I have been using DB for a few years now and have been impressed with how quickly a suggestion for product improvement turns from a blurb on the listmail to an actual tangible feature. I've seen incredible changes that seem to happen overnight.

Many of the glitches that plagued earlier versions (yes there were some) were fixed within days of discovery. I can't remember a serious bug ever NOT being fixed.

This is a bargain, especially when you consider the "customer service" aspect of the package. The Metro SE product mentioned in another review is nearly twice the price of Doggiebox. I have permanently retired by Boss DR 550MKII which, by the way, I've rebuilt as a Doggiebox Kit!.

Doggiebox Developer NoteVersion 1.2 brings MIDI! - Version: 1.2, 9/13/2004 03:24PM PST

Hi folks, At long last, the new version brings support for MIDI (realtime output, SMF export, and machine control), as well as a host of other improvements. If you experience crashes or other anomalies, please feel free to contact me personally at so that I may work with you to isolate, reproduce and fix the problem. (Posting gripes on here without any detailed information are not terribly helpful to anyone.) Enjoy the doggie! -b
