Product Description:

Zygoat Doggiebox is a versatile percussion sequencer (drum machine application) for Mac OS X. Using Doggiebox, you can create realistic-sounding drum tracks in minutes, ranging from the style of a human drummer on a full kit to imaginatively bizarre experimental pieces.

Whether you want to produce a demo without taking the time to set up and record real drums or just need a click track for recording guitar, Doggiebox is the perfect tool to fill the gap. With Doggiebox, you can:

  • create and modify drum tracks of unlimited length using a flexible yet intuitive interface
  • easily edit intricate rhythms (zoomable to 12 subdivisions per beat), including triplets
  • specify tempo and time signature changes (including compound time) over arbitrary bars in a song
  • play back a song using different drum kits, using automated instrument matching
  • create and modify your own drum kits, including an unlimited range of instrument types (e.g. drums, cymbals, accessories) and variants, including their actual sounds and icons
  • define, arrange and re-use song sections, such as verses and choruses, organized in a scrolling list for easy navigation and management
  • drag and drop sections between and within songs
  • export your creations to AIFF or WAV (or any of a dozen formats) for use in other audio applications like GarageBand or ProTools

What's new in this version:

  • The song editor window has been redesigned for better usability: a) the drum kit drawer has been moved into the main window and is much larger; b) the song name, details and kit are no longer accessed via a separate dialog sheet.
  • A much improved section and playlist structuring model has been introduced, with corresponding menu commands and key shortcuts, as well as support for cut/copy/paste and drag 'n drop.
  • The Preferences dialog has been simplified. The default drum kit picker is gone; instead, Doggiebox now automatically remembers the most recently chosen kit.
  • Added a new preference for "begin new line at each section", which will create line breaks in the pattern editor for better visual navigation.
  • Changes to the master tempo and master level sliders are now Undoable, and the master tempo slider can now be reset to 100% by double-clicking it.
  • Using keyboard shortcuts for selecting drums in the song editor finally works.
  • Cosmetic improvements to pattern editor.
  • Fixed bug where the duration of exported audio would be truncated in some circumstances when "Allow final sounds to decay completely" was turned on.
  • Other miscellaneous bug fixes and improvements.
  • Mac OS X 10.2 is now required, and 10.3 is recommended.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.3
  • Mac OS X 10.2

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.2 or higher (10.3 recommended)

Doggiebox ReviewEven Better - Version: 1.2, 9/14/2004 06:35AM PST

A great piece of software that keeps getting better. You can get a basic drum pattern worked out in next to no time - getting a full song is dead easy even for this total non-drummer. I started using this softwre about 12 months ago, and since then I have not even plugged in my Korg.

If this is all that recommended it, it would still be a good buy, but the best part of the experience is the service that is given to the users. Bug fixes are usually done the next day (some on the same day). Suggestions for improvements, changes are listened to and actioned on.

I see a previous poster has said that it crashed 3 times. If this happens, try e-mailing the developer, I can't guarantee it, but I would have a punt that the crash would be fixed PDQ.

One of the best pieces of software I have ever purchased.

Doggiebox ReviewTry before you buy, but try the latest build. - Version: 1.2, 9/13/2004 05:22PM PST

One of the advantages of purchasing software from a smaller company is that you get unparalleled access to the developer. In some cases, you can actually influence the product and it's feature set. Such is the case with Zygoat and Doggiebox.

I have been using DB for a few years now and have been impressed with how quickly a suggestion for product improvement turns from a blurb on the listmail to an actual tangible feature. I've seen incredible changes that seem to happen overnight.

Many of the glitches that plagued earlier versions (yes there were some) were fixed within days of discovery. I can't remember a serious bug ever NOT being fixed.

This is a bargain, especially when you consider the "customer service" aspect of the package. The Metro SE product mentioned in another review is nearly twice the price of Doggiebox. I have permanently retired by Boss DR 550MKII which, by the way, I've rebuilt as a Doggiebox Kit!.

Doggiebox Developer NoteVersion 1.2 brings MIDI! - Version: 1.2, 9/13/2004 03:24PM PST

zygoat
Hi folks, At long last, the new version brings support for MIDI (realtime output, SMF export, and machine control), as well as a host of other improvements. If you experience crashes or other anomalies, please feel free to contact me personally at so that I may work with you to isolate, reproduce and fix the problem. (Posting gripes on here without any detailed information are not terribly helpful to anyone.) Enjoy the doggie! -b
