Product Description:

Use Narrator to read out a play or story with different voices for each of the parts. It uses speech synthesis to read out marked passages using specified voice attributes. You can choose different voices, rates, pitches, inflections, and volumes for each character in the story. The words are highlighted on-screen and there are also a couple of silent read-along options for stage directions, or for you to read out your own parts. Starting with version 2, you can have multiple chapters in each document to help organize the story, use a word replacement dictionary to fine-tune the pronunciation, and can export the story as an AAC sound file or export it to iTunes, so you can listen on an iPod or iPhone, just like your own audiobook! Plus many other appearance and functionality improvements.

What's new in this version:

  • Reduced the font size of the description field, to allow seeing more text.
  • Added description field values to the welcome document.
  • Now removes the show/hide toolbar button in the Preferences window, as per Apple's Human Interface Guidelines.
  • Changed the trial reminders to count downwards instead of upwards.
  • Added a nifty trial reminder in the window titlebar.
  • Removed the random daily license reminders; redundant now that the window title has a reminder.
  • Fixed a bug were automatic reading might not occur if the document takes too long to load.
  • Changed the way the version and release numbers are updated internally.
  • Added French localization, thanks to Philippe Bonnaure.

Dejal Narrator ReviewThe Complete Accessibility Package - Version: 2.0.1, 5/28/2008 02:05AM PST

lavallette--2008
Just downloaded and installed version 2.0.1 of this app. And I have to say it is a quantum leap improvement on version 1. Along with MacDictate, Narrator has now provided me with the complete accessibility package. And with the ability to create a doc, choose a voice, alter inflections, then export to iTunes. I have just adapted a book a visually impaired person has just written with Narrator. Each character was then given their own voice and altered to provide its own personality. Once transferred to iTunes then this visually impaired person can listen to it when they want to alter, edit or whatever to their book. Along with the price which is an astonishingly low price - I decided on the Household License - now my whole family can enjoy 'playing' about with it.

Visually, the app has been improved leaps and bounds and is now proudly in keeping with my Leopard. All in all, an absolute bargain, a very effective tool and a dream to use.

As a published writer, I have always believed that the ears are the best judge and critic of written work, and sometimes of people too. Narrator is certainly testament to that. Well done Dejal.

By the way...for the cynics I am not related to the developer or met him. I am just a proud user.

I'm not sure I get it. I haven't tried it yet but I think I understand that one person can make a story and sound different, or is it for a bunch of people to slightly change the sound of their voices as they read their part.

What I would like to see or make if I could, would be an app where one person could change his voice for different players and make your own audio kids book or something.

I can do that now, but it would be a lot of work. Just clicking on a player and then talk to record would be cool.
