Installer Doesn’t Find Any Program(s) to Update - Version: 11.5.7, 2/9/2010 04:37PM PST

I have my Microsoft Office 2004 folder in my standard Applications folder, but when I run the installer for 11.5.7, it reports—for a few moments—that its searching for programs to update, but then it returns me to its own window without having done anything. (My Office 2004 is exactly where it was when the 11.5.6 installer worked successfully—and both my Word and Excel programs show, in their About displays, that they are at v11.5.6.) I got the same nothing-done behavior when trying the standalone installer for 11.5.7 downloaded here and when I tried the “Check for Updates” from the Help menu within Word and then, again, within Excel.

For some strange reason, the update deleted Excel. I only had Word and Excel installed. Had to reinstall from CD and do a couple updates to get back to 11.5.6 (first to 11.5.5, then to 11.5.6), but it worked the second time. Not sure what happened.
Why bother with Microsoft?

I don't use anything Microsoft now that the iWork software will do everything I need. But on a whim, I decided to upgrade Office, which is still on the computer. Well, the update crashes every time. Now that I think about it, this kind of reliability is why I left the Windows platform to begin with.
