eDonkey Troubleshooting Report*Finally* getting uploads and downloads and no 'lowid's :-) - Version: 1.1, 9/11/2005 01:28PM PST

First I couldn't even get it to connect with anything. So I made sure I allowed sharing (System Preferences - Sharing, etc.) -- which may have been overkill since I never had to play with that option in Acquisition or LimeWire... .

Then, after playing with the router (a D-Link DI-604) and opening certain ports, I at least got the search function to work - but wasn't able to really download properly or to let others upload.

I finally figuered out that my router has a different IP Address than my public IP Address that all those whats-you-IP web sites were telling me (the router address is found by opening the System Preferences - Internet & Network - Network - and it's listed either in the Built-in Ethernet description or if you double-click it to get the full information).

I went back to the router's web-based configuration page and made sure the firewall ports were open to *both* IP Addresses (one step for the router's IP and another step for the Public IP). Even though I now have a lot of eDonkey open ports, at least this thing works properly now.

Things I like:

The search is extensive and it keeps searching for the same file without prompting from you.

Things I'm not so happy about:

It takes a heck of a long time for most files to download (i.e. under 10 kbs) and I can't preview the files to check if I already have the file under another name. Oh, and the program got completely hung up when I tried to share my large folder of mp3s so I'm left with sharing a much smaller folder I had to create specifically for eDonkey.

For hard-to-find files, this has been the best P2P I've had. For more common files, I think I'll stick with LimeWire or Acquisition.

Hope that helps somebody.

eDonkey ReviewI'm through with this - Version: 1.1, 5/19/2005 02:38PM PST

I made the ultimate test:
I've used edonkey 2000 and mlmac 0.75 parallel for 4 months.
I downloaded exactly the same 15 files (same edonkey-hash) with both applications, also same online time, same start time and so on.
The results:
edonkey is more reliable, there are less bugs. It has actually never performed unexpected quits. But: It finished only 3 (!!!) of the files!!!
In the same time mlmac finished 14 files !!!
So I decided to scratch edonkey from my hard disk.
My only sorrow: mlmac has many minor bugs (Sometimes the preview doesn't work, sometimes it does not connect to all networks and so on).
I'm really looking forward to the next version of mlmac!!!

This is the first eDonkey client for the mac that works reliably for me. No crashes or incomplete downloads. The interface, while aqua, is in need of a lot of work, but these issues are cosmetic rather than functional.

eDonkey ReviewMuch Better - Version: 1.1, 3/30/2005 09:19PM PST

So far this version seems to be much improved over the last one. There is finally an Aqua-based interface, and it appears to use less processor power/RAM. It also boots faster, and so far I have not had any crashes. I would, however, like to see an "archive" function in the "Format" menu under the search tab. I also enctountered an error that occurred the first time I booted the new version. The program could not find the "contact.dat" file, which is contained in the same folder. Because of this, it could not connect to overnet. After a few minutes, however, this problem disappeared. You may need to d/l a list, as it worked shortly after I clicked the button.

This client is the only one that I've gotten to work. Michel Moreau's mldonkey binaries used to work decently and Xdonkey was always fun to play with, but eDonkey 1.0 is the only donkey client that's ever worked for me.

I've not experienced any crashes or automatic sharing (except for the "incoming" folder), check it out. :)

I've never tried the other versions but this one is baaaaad.
I've given up using it. Crash after crash after crash after crash...
If you're looking for a file sharing client try anything but eDonkey V 1.0

eDonkey ReviewNot that bad... - Version: 1.0, 1/3/2005 08:12AM PST

Dear Cowicide,

Actually, as far as I can see, Edonkey does not share your Desktop folder, but its own Download folder which might be located on your desktop automatically. that is why you can not change it.
one has to undestand this software, then it is very useful.
first, set the network options on "connect to edonkey network", this will get the most results. then leave the the network ports at 45 or limit them to 20-30, but do not go lower than 10, for it will not work properly ...
the only problem i see is a quite a lot of network traffic (no problem with unlimited flatrate) and a very high cpu usage (this IS a problem). but the results are good and i would recommend it despite of the few stars... :-)
