AutoHide Troubleshooting ReportRetraction - Does NOT work properly with Leopard! - Version: 1.3.8, 1/13/2008 02:02PM PST

Okay, here's the deal...AutoHide works with Leopard but you can not modify the preferences and exclude certain applications from hiding. So for me it's pretty much worthless unless someone can come up with a workaround. I tried to edit the prefs file with BBEdit (copying my old pref from Tiger) but AutoHide just seemed to ignore the modifications.

AutoHide CommentarySeems to be working fine work with Leopard - Version: 1.3.8, 1/13/2008 01:39PM PST

After reading the previous comment about AutoHide not working with Leopard I decided to try DragThing's auto-hiding feature. I love Dragthing for it's custom dock features but I was not as happy with it's implementation of automatically hiding applications as compared to AutoHide.

Today I decided to install AutoHide 1.3.8 and try it for myself. After a few minutes of testing AutoHide seems to be working great with Leopard. Perhaps the previous user who said it did not work "upgraded" to Leopard (as compared to a clean install) and this caused some preference problems. All I can tell you is that I did a clean install on a new Mac Pro and so far it seems to be working fine.

I will report back here if it fails with Leopard but so far so good!

This is a super handy program, but doesn't work on Leopard. Two emails to the author got no responses. That's a real shame!

AutoHide Usage TipHere's version 1.3.6 - Version: 1.3.8, 5/25/2007 09:38AM PST

Wow, no feedback since 2005! After reading these feedback comments, I decided to find version 1.3.6 or not use AutoHide at all. I found 1.3.6...

http://cryptonictech.com/_products/AutoHide_1.3.6_Installer.hqx

I just installed it today, I'm using 10.4.9 and it appears to do exactly what I want it to do - automatically hide all other applications when I switch to a specific application.

AutoHide CommentaryIs there any other app that does this feature? - Version: 1.3.8, 6/22/2005 08:20AM PST

iHatePC
I have been using autohide for a year or two. I can't understand why apple does not just incorporate this feature into the finder. Like others have reported, I have also never been able to get version 1.3.8 working. I was still using version 1.3.6 but today it stopped working. I can probably get it working if I dick around with it and ditch the prefs but I would really like to find an alternative program that does the same thing.

Is there any other application that can do the same autohide feature? I know that Dragthing can do something similar but I would like to find an application that will auto hide when using Apple's dock to switch between apps. Who knows, maybe Dragthing can do this, I guess that I will need to give it a try and see.

AutoHide CommentaryTotally nuts! - Version: 1.3.8, 12/17/2004 09:40PM PST

1.3.8 came out a year ago and totally broke 1.3.6 and nothing has happened to correct the matter. How nuts is that: put out a new release that is no good, and then walk away? Somebody wanna post 1.3.6 again?

AutoHide Reviewv1.3.6 worked, but 1.3.8 is broken. - Version: 1.3.8, 7/2/2004 05:09PM PST

Ditto, jonsaw: Version 1.3.8's "never hide" and "never hide when switching to" options are broken with this version. This is a simple application, and as such, 2 of the 3 basic features have stopped working. So I have to take away 2/3 of the stars. I've inquired with the author about this, and have yet to receive a reply. Wish I'd just kept 1.3.6 (which deserved 5 stars).

AutoHide CommentaryOptions for "Don't Hide", etc. don't work - Version: 1.3.8, 6/18/2004 01:46AM PST

John Sawyer
I too am finding that version 1.3.8's options to never hide apps you select, and to not hide apps you select when you switch out of them, aren't working.

While I'm at it, a feature request: what about a simple option that hides all app windows only when you switch to the Finder? The option to create a list of apps to not hide the last app you switched from can almost do the job, except that it's a pain to create such a list, and I always have to add apps to the list to get the desired effect, since I always have new apps coming in (shareware, etc.). I don't mind having background app windows visible, except when I go to the Desktop. I'd prefer this option mainly because it takes the Mac too long to hide and show windows as you switch between apps.
