Product Description:

DropAES is the descendant of the freeware DropTBZ2 (compresses files into .tbz .tgz .zip .tar format) with added encryption/decryption (with Blowfish and TripleDES ciphers) and file shreding functionalities. Just like in dropTBZ2, file decompression is not included since it could be achieved with freeware stuffit expander. Several notes:
1. DropAES has nothing to do with AES(Rijndael), I initially intend to include Rijndael, Two fish, Serpent code in it but this may violate the rigid US export law, the only way out is to warp OpenSSL (or I have to move to other country, finish DropAES then come back) and as most people know bf and 3des are the most researched and proven safe cipher, AES is still sort of too new although it's fun to use.
2. DropAES's main function is for icon dropping shreding or compression into .tbz, .tgz, .tar, .zip (no .dmg) and the archive created is compatible to those on other platforms. Icon dropping encryption is not implemented since in this case you are supposed to take more care. All functions can also be accessed through file->open menu item. DropTBZ2(and now DropAES) is still the only freeware GUI tool that provide tar->bzip2 as far as I know.
3. The unregistered version has no limit on its functionality, no timeout, no time delay, no remind dialog. You are invited to use it until you have the intention to support the author. Suggest design idea or donate icons will also get free reg code.
4. DropAES has been tested on MacOSX 10.1, not yet for earlier version of Mac OSX.

What's new in this version:

  • change name to DropAES (see readme for reason), it is now a unlimitted shareware
  • added encryption/decryption, file shreding
  • icon dropping for shreding (icon dropping for compression is already included in DropTBZ2)
  • fixed some memory leaks in compression engine in DropTBZ2

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.2
  • Mac OS X 10.1

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.1

DropAES CommentaryCypher is Rijndael… - Version: 1.0, 5/22/2002 08:14AM PST

dcoshel
(AES), free, comes with source, drag-n-drop, etc. etc. Shred is two steps - encrypt to garbage, drop in trash. Who needs more? With careful key management (a second Keychain Access file with a 32 character password), you could also use a 650 Mb AES-encrypted .dmg volume courtesy of Disk Copy. Volume wipe is just Command-D on a large encrypted file until there's no more free space; OS X does volume space reuse right, so you can be certain that what you think is erased, is.
