Product Description:

PopChar X is the Mac OS X version of PopChar Pro. It is as easy to use as its predecessor: Click the small "P box" in the corner of the screen to find and insert characters or HTML symbols. You can use the character table of PopChar X like a menu or make it "sticky" to insert multiple characters in a row. PopChar X also allows you to select the font and size of the characters to be inserted.

exclude common characters (letters, digits and accents)

v2.0.1 fixes a problem where PopChar X 2.0 crashed on some configurations.

New features in v2.0

Automatic font detection in Word, Excel, Illustrator, InDesign and BBEdit.
PopChar X has been prepared for localization. Version 2.0 supports English and German. Other languages will follow.
When the option key is pressed, PopChar X now inserts the HTML codes for selected Unicode symbols.
PopChar X now supports the scroll wheel on extended mice.
The preferred font and the ?styled insertion? mode (including the font size) are now remembered separately for each application.
Works around a bug in Mac OS X (versions 10.2.0 up to 10.2.2) that could lead to crashes at startup.
Keyboard modifiers now appear correctly for all international systems.
The PopChar X window is now less transparent, which improves readability of characters.
PopChar X consistently uses Quartz-based drawing of anti-aliased text.
Scrolling of Unicode tables has been accelerated.
PopChar X now uses significantly less CPU time when it is not in use.

This has been a favorite of mine for several years. It sits there very quietly in the corner of my screen taking up very little space or processing power. But when I need to find that odd symbol or character, I just click on it to find it and paste it into my document. I can even see all of the different variants of the character across all of my fonts. And now it has so many more features, it's just amazing! I wouldn't know what to do without it.

While there’s no “What's new in this version” here in VersionTracker, here’s what I found at the developer’s site <http://www.ergonis.com/products/popcharx/history.html>:

PopChar X v 4.1.1 (November 2008) - Changes since v 4.1:
Works around a problem with inserting characters in FreeHand 10.
Fixes a performance bottleneck caused by repeated access to certain preferences.
Fixes an occasional crash when expanding or collapsing Unicode groups.
Solves a problem that caused inserted characters to appear with a shadow in certain Carbon applications.
German localization now contains the correct quotes.
