This is due to Ambrosia's new anti-piracy mechanism. The serial you buy is good for 2 weeks. After that it expires. When you need to use it again, it will connect to their server to update it for another 2 weeks. That way any pirated codes can be blocked on the server level so that they can't use pirated codes. If you are upgrading from Classic BT to BT for OS X, that does need you to buy a new code.

I've been using Bubble Trouble and Pop Pop for a while and suddenly the passwords are no longer valid. I enter the password I'm given by Ambrosia and it tells me my date and time are set wrong. They aren't and I can't play my games.
It's going to be a while before Ambrosia gets my business again.
