HenWen ReviewHenWen - Version: 2.1.2, 4/5/2008 11:54AM PST

I've got an Intel Mac running 10.4.10 and HenWen works just fine with this version.

LetterStick, however, will not work with Intel.

Unfortunately, the author says:
"I have no plans to update HenWen."
I guess it's back to Snort with the CLI. :(

I've sent a note to the author to see if he plans on updating for Intel. It doesn't currently work under Rosetta.

HenWen Troubleshooting ReportA two-year project to get LetterStick working? - Version: 2.1.2, 4/30/2006 07:50AM PST

Well, not really two years, but I'm trying again.

The "Permission Denied" error keeps occuring. I've tried every possible combination of permissions on LetterStick and /var/log/snort/snort_alert that I can think of, but no joy.

Can somebody please tell me, precisely, what the permissions should be on these? Or, maybe I'll drop in again in 2008 and ask again.

Cheers

HenWen Developer NoteApologies to Jaguar users... - Version: 2.1.1, 6/16/2005 08:46PM PST

In version 2.1.1 I accidentally broke Jaguar (10.2.x) compatibility. The reason why it won't run is because at the time I built HenWen, I didn't realize that GCC 4.0 would create binaries that would only run under Panther & later. Version 2.1, which is available on the product page, was built using GCC 3.3 and works fine under Jaguar. I've already fixed this problem in CVS.

Should bad traffic/ nmap pings display alert messages through LetterStick? I went to Shields Up just to see if it would set off anything with LetterStick and no alert boxes appeared, although I do see that activity was logged with Snort's Alert Log in Terminal. I just want to be sure I've got things configured properly.

No real problems setting up HenWen, I love how detailed the protection settings can be. Thanks for spending the time to make Snort easily configurable for OSX users.

Great implementation of Snort for OS X.

But how do you turn on autoblocking by IP?

Want to know a secret to setting up snort on your Mac to help detect network problems, without compiling unix binaries or learning unix first? Get henwen. It makes installing snort and detecting problems on any network very mac-like. Thats not to say it isn't for the advanced sysadmin either. Interested in testing out an NDIS on your home or work network, but not sure how to start or what to do? Just read the manual. All my questions were answered there (its a ridiculously easy setup, most people can get by just opening Henwen and never reading the manual, but why miss out?) The author Nick did a ton of work and such a good job on the manual. It clearly explains what Henwen does and why you might need it and what you can and can't do with it, but beyond that, it also gives info about networks and security. if you have the slightest need to investigate a NIDS (network intrusion detectiuon system) you need look no further.

If you're getting that error message, it's almost certainly because your user account isn't a member of the adminstrative group "admin". Run /Applications/Utilities/NetInfo Manager.app, click on "groups" in the list, then click the "admin" group. Is your account name listed in the value for the 'users' property? If not, you need to add yourself to that group (e.g. if the value is "root", change it to "root, yourname").
