Product Description:

cocoAspell is Mac OS X implementation of Aspell -- "A more intelligent Ispell" -- that is being developed by Kevin Atkinson. Here is a brief snippet of how Kevin describes Aspell on his web site:

Aspell is an Open Source spell checker designed to eventually replace Ispell. Its main feature is that it does a much better job of coming up with possible suggestions than Ispell does. In fact recent tests shows that it even does better than Microsoft Word 97's spell checker or just about any other spell checker I have seen. It also has support for checking (La)TeX and Html files, and run time support for other non English languages.

What's new in this version:

adds new graphics and fixes some problems with Keynote 2 and BBEdit. Note that for some reason only English spell checking works in Pages. I'm looking into that.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.3

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.3 or higher

cocoAspell ReviewWorks OK for me -also on Intel Mac - Version: 2.0.4, 3/6/2007 12:37AM PST

I've had no trouble installing CocoAspell, on either my PowerMac G4 or on my new MacBook Pro (intel Core 2 duo).

Previous versions have worked with mixed results, this one is definately a keeper.

The only complication I came across was because of a broken dictionary file for the Dutch language, which is not the responsibility of tyhe CocoAspell developer, of course. BTW other variants of the Dutch dictionary compile OK.

Just a suggestion: I guess a lot of people would appreciate an installer for dictionary files other than English, even though the manual installation is pretty straightforward.

cocoAspell Troubleshooting ReportUninstall problems - Version: 2.0.4, 10/24/2006 03:01PM PST

I installed CocoAspell to help with spellchecking TeX documents (TeXShop). I liked the concept but I did not find it particularly helpful, and I preferred the native Apple spellcheck (despite underlining the TeX commands). So I tried to uninstall it, following the FAQs on the developer's page and right-clicking on the Spelling icon in System Preferences and removing that.

But after i uninstalled it, the English dictionary in Spelling did not work (in any program, such as TextEdit, Mail, etc.). The other languages worked fine (red underlines, and so on), but English did not. Eventually, after much troubleshooting, I simply deleted the AppleSpell.service file from the system/library/services folder and reinstalled the one from my other Mac. It now works fine. I just wanted to provide this feedback in case anyon else has similar problems.

cocoAspell ReviewPerfect for us who write in rare languages! - Version: 2.0.4, 4/13/2006 10:40AM PST

The installation worked exactly as written in the "Read before you install..." file on my iMac (Core Duo).
Thanks for filling in this gap :-)
