Product Description:

webEdition is a price-breaking database-grounded web content management system. webEdition stores all "content information" (including text, images, graphics, flash movies, style sheets, etc.) in a central database. The advantage of this system is that the page itself does not have to be edited if the content has to be changed. Instead, only the database entry has to be changed and the corresponding page re-saved. Additionally, the content stored in the database can be rapidly searched or used in other ways (e.g. as a central repository). We decided to base webEdition on MySQL, a database supported by all major providers. This means that a central database contains all the content on the web site you wish to manage with webEdition. However, you hardly notice the database, since it runs primarily in the background. Users only see their web sites and the input boxes on the actual web pages.

The webEdition program only has to be installed on the provider's (ISP) server once. This is done by using a simple installation program run on any computer with internet access. Anything else you wish to do can be taken care of with a standard web browser. There is no need to install any software locally.

You can expand webEdition with a variety of add-on modules, such as:

  • User Management standard (Admin/Editor and Workspaces)
  • User Management PRO (Permissions, Groups, Subgroups, Aliases, Workspaces)
  • Customer Managenent (Registering, different views and links for registered users)
  • Database-/Object module (Integrate database functionality into your website)
  • Scheduler (Time-controlled publishing of pages and information)
  • Shop (Shop framework to create web shops)
  • Editor Plug-in (Combine your favorite HTML-editor with webEdition)
  • Workflow (Enables you to set up workflows without restrictions)[available January 2003]

This is a very nice program that mixes opensource and commercial (paid) modules.

It has decent documentation which you don't get in opensource. Also the company's excellent free app MAMP has done more to enable opensource on the Mac than just about any other product I can think of.

These guys have very close Mac intergration and should not be overlooked when considering CMS. I hope to see PHP5 support soon...

With experience for now more than three years of webEdition I must say: it is a great Content Management System. We use it on Macs - it is well done for Mac-Support. The company also is very active in developping enhancements. In three years time, the system advanced by great leaps, without any problem to the user. The regular updates are fine, the modules add to it and work well.
Compared with Typo3, (Opensource), you save a lot in developping it, if you are not a professional programmer. I personally prefer webedition, as it puts us as a user in the position to fully control what we got, we do not depend on outside sources. I think with Typo3 we would not be able to come to the same result.

If you want to have a look at our site: http://www.niggemann.de

It also shows, that a CMS is not just plain bulletin board but lets you do great design

webEdition CMS Usage TipTry Mambo - Version: 3.4.0.5, 9/21/2005 03:07PM PST

I've been through tons of CMS programs mostly on Linux and the best so far is Mambo. It's also free and you can integrate mambo php-shop for full on e-commerce. (also free) We develop on our sites on this technology now. I won't say implementation was a breeze the first time, but we've installed full websites in under 24 hours using this. an example: voltaicsystems.ca
