Product Description:

SilverKeeper is a freeware application from LaCie that automates Backups to external storage devices like hard disks optical disks, and other removable storage devices that have IDE, ATAPI, SCSI, USB, or Firewire interfaces. Essentially any read/write device that can mount on the Macintosh Desktop can be used with SilverKeeper.

What's new in this version:

  • Changed user interface to inform user of volume limitations for backup. SK now checks Source and Destination for limitations of file name length, file size, Ownership/Permissions support and notifies the user as best as possible before performing a backup. When backing up to external drive best disk format is Mac OS Extended. There can be problems when destination is an external drive with a non-MacOS file format, or when the destination is a network server: FAT32: - the following characters may not be used in file or folder names: ? [ ] / \ = + < > ; : " , | * - 4GB is the maximum file size, however some operating systems may limit this to 2GB. - Macintosh files may not be copied correctly if there are resource and data forks, or custom icons Windows, Linux, or UNIX server: - the above character limitations for FAT32 volumes apply - the destination volume may not preserve permissions information - refer to server documentation for other file, folder name and maximum file length limitations AppleShare Servers: - 2GB is the maximum file size
  • Changed user interface to ask user to setup options for creating OS X bootable volume. This involves turning off "Copy Set to Folder" if set and requiring the target volume to be empty. This prevents user from losing any existing data on the target volume during backup.
  • Implemented a new magic folder "SilverKeeper_noRemove" within backup Destination. Place any folders or files on the Destination that you want to retain across successive Backups within this folder. Normally, SilverKeeper will make sure that the Destination will mirror the Source. No file or folder within this magic folder will be modified or erased by SilverKeeper.
  • Fixed backup of OS X 10.3.x Boot volume to mark the volume as bootable for open firmware. After backup, using Restart with Option key down, the open firmware will recognize the new volume as containing an OS X system. Using the Startup Volume System Preference Panel will also set bootability correctly.
  • Improved system performance when SilverKeeper is NOT the active application.
  • Fixed OS X copy routine to tolerate "time stamp" off by 1 hr on servers. Some servers do not report present time correctly when compensating for Daylight Savings Time.
  • Reports errors during Backup at both Log Header and end of Log.
  • Fixed plist file to display correct version and "Get Info" strings.
  • Fixed log to handle file names greater than 128 characters
  • Correctly report as error -600 (not -50) and provides text description of error.
  • Correctly copy packages from volumes to folders.

SilverKeeper is easy to use and tech support is fast to answer any questions.
I’ve backed up and restored with SilverKey 1.1.2 and though backups aren’t
my favorite weekend job, I look forward to using the new V 1.1.4.
SilverKeeper is a clever name as you can save your money instead
of buying high priced backup SW. I don’t work for Lacie either.

LaCie SilverKeeper ReviewOS9 great! OSX Yuck! - Version: 1.1.3, 8/22/2005 05:02PM PST

I run both, OS 9.2 and OS 10.3.9 on separate machines. I use silverkeeper on both.

On OS 9.2 it has always worked flawlessly.

On OS 10.3.9 i have two Lacie 160GB firewire 800 drives daisy chained into one firewire port and silverkeeper can never accomplish a complete backup between these two drives without stalling and, ultimately, crashing. I have to force quit the program ... and even force quitting doesn't eliminate the program from my desktop so i have to force shut down the entire computer.

Yes, i have done all the usual maintenance on my G5 (rebuilding directories, prebinding, etc) and the "ignore owndership" button on the destination volume is NOT checked.

I wouldn't recommend silverkeeper for OS 10.3.9.
