LaCie SilverKeeper ReviewSilverKeeper backups - Version: 1.1.2, 9/12/2005 04:45PM PST

SilverKeeper is easy to use and tech support is fast to answer any questions.
I’ve backed up and restored with SilverKey 1.1.2 and though backups aren’t
my favorite weekend job, I look forward to using the new V 1.1.4.
SilverKeeper is a clever name as you can save your money instead
of buying high priced backup SW. I don’t work for Lacie either.

LaCie SilverKeeper ReviewOS9 great! OSX Yuck! - Version: 1.1.3, 8/22/2005 05:02PM PST

I run both, OS 9.2 and OS 10.3.9 on separate machines. I use silverkeeper on both.

On OS 9.2 it has always worked flawlessly.

On OS 10.3.9 i have two Lacie 160GB firewire 800 drives daisy chained into one firewire port and silverkeeper can never accomplish a complete backup between these two drives without stalling and, ultimately, crashing. I have to force quit the program ... and even force quitting doesn't eliminate the program from my desktop so i have to force shut down the entire computer.

Yes, i have done all the usual maintenance on my G5 (rebuilding directories, prebinding, etc) and the "ignore owndership" button on the destination volume is NOT checked.

I wouldn't recommend silverkeeper for OS 10.3.9.

I very like this very light and easy software.

But, I can't make 'SilverKeeper 1.1.3' backup in accordance with "Schedule" setting.

[Schedule dialogue setting]
Scheduled backup: checked
Time: 12:05 PM
Daily

Any suggestions or tips?

LaCie SilverKeeper CommentarySIMPLE, FAST, RELIABLE BACKUP - Version: 1.1.3, 7/13/2005 05:40AM PST

I've had SilverKeeper Backup for a couple of years and never used it until recently. I'm very impressed with it. It is simple to use, EXTREMELY fast (faster backup than any other program I've tried), can be scheduled, and is reliable.

First time I ran it was flawless in Panther. When running in Tiger it erased my drivers for my cd/dvd recorder (New 17" PowerBook). Erased parts of disk utility and many other programs. Disk utility would open but could not do anything repair pref box no erase disk. Had to reinstall system and many programs. Why it would alter the disk it was copying I don't understand.
Use retrospect and make a duplicate so you have a working volume.

Great program...apart from one thing. It doesn't seem to UPDATE existing files in the destination. If files have been added/removed from the source, then Silverkeeper will add/remove files in the destination - HOWEVER when I update a file in the source - the desintation file remains unchanged.

Why is that?

LaCie SilverKeeper ReviewBroken software - Version: 1.1.3, 5/20/2005 11:36AM PST

1) There's no help when I choose help from SK's Help menu. Help Viewer opens with a blank page.

2) Scheduled backups do not occur (see problem #3 below).

3) After quitting SK 1.1.3 _always_, without fail LaCie Backup Support crashes :-(

Emailing SK tech support was a waste of time. Apparently "my crash reports provide no useful information" and it must be my system that's stuffed, despite _every_ single other installed application working fine, including those installed after SK.

In short: while SK showed a lot of promise, it failed miserably, and is totally worthless for everything but manual backups (and I'm not sure I'd trust them, given the host of problems in the rest of the application).

What a letdown from LaCie. Still, at least they make decent Hard Drives, even if they can't write and test software.

Oh, and the documentation included is very poor. It hardly covers any of the various settings in SK.

Now that I have solved my installing problems, SilverKeeper works very well on backing up the user data on my internal hard-drive (iMac G4 40G) to my iPod (4G 20G).

Only NOT ignoring the ownership did not work, because of my iPod I think (SilverKeeper tried to copy the right owner but the iPod didn't accept it).

By the way, NEVER forget repairing permissions after (and even before if you don't do it regulary) installing something!

What has happened to the reliability of Lacie with the Mac? I have an external 160G hooked with firewire and have had ongoing problems with this equipment. Lacie has even replaced by former drive with a newer one. To no avail, I'm still running into big time freezes and stalls. Thinking that this latest update to Silverkeeper would be the remedy we are all waiting for. Right. Even force quitting this garbage won't shut it down. Do yourself a favor and pass it by.
