Product Description:

DEVONthink is the Mac incarnation of the real paperless office. It's a notepad, outliner, scrapbook manager, information manager, freeform database, archive, image database and bookmark manager - your personal »supplementary brain«. DEVONthink is capable of intelligently storing and organising all types of data like plain and text files, HTML, XML, PDF documents and images. Put in whatever you want, organise it, let DEVONthink search for it.

Key features:
  • Stores whatever you like, from texts, images, PDF, HTML and XML over text clippings, iChat logs, scripts and Microsoft Word/RTF files to links
  • Is able to index contents only instead of storing them in the database
  • Integrated browser based on Apple's WebKit (»Safari Engine«)
  • Helps you to sort in new stuff (»Classify«, »See Also«, keywords etc.)
  • Advanced text editing including rulers, highlighting realtime statistics and display of invisible characters
  • Lightning-fast, intelligent search function
  • User-defined labels
  • Dynamic Wiki-style links and static cross links
  • Built-in outlining capabilities
  • Easy-to-use interface providing Services and a Dock menu
  • Supports Services (like CalcService or WordService)
  • Supports drag-and-drop in both directions
What's unique:
  • Im- and exports Finder comments
  • Captures contents from the built-in browser or from Safari
  • Imports e-mails from Apple Mail
  • Plays QuickTime movies and MP3 files
  • Stores aliases to local files
  • Groups or ungroups documents, organizes them into hierarchies
  • Works with much more file formats than all alternatives
  • Batch imports and exports data extremely fast
  • Works flawlessly with huge databases (>300 MB)
  • Does not need indexing but searches faster than the competition
  • Uses all major features of Mac OS X

What's new in this version:

  • NEWPossibility to drag & drop emails from Microsoft Entourage to DEVONthink
  • NEWTaking or dragging notes from Mailsmith to DEVONthink tries to store the sender's email adress in the URL of the note
  • NEWTaking plain/rich notes in DEVONagent stores the URL of the current browser window if possible (requires upcoming DEVONagent 1.5)
  • NEWEmail attachments dragged from Apple's Mail to DEVONthink are from now on always copied (and never referenced as the attachment's files are temporary)
  • NEWCompletely rewritten zooming of text views always wraps text to the width of the window
  • NEWSplit view font is now used for horizontal split views too (preference renamed to "List Views Font")

  • Improved"Action Import/Index/Link" scripts skip temporary downloads created by Safari
  • ImprovedSearch windows support the "File > Export > ..." commands
  • Improved"Touch" item to "Content" menu added
  • Improved"View" menu displays an icon for each view menu item and "View" toolbar item displays an icon for each popup menu item in text-only mode
  • ImprovedLaunch and about panels don't float above windows of other applications anymore and display the entered license
  • Improved"Top Group" command deselects all items (list/split view) or displays only the root items (column view) if the current browser window is already displaying the top group of the database.
  • ImprovedCopying text in Microsoft Word and using "New from clipboard" or dragging text from Microsoft Word to DEVONthink creates rich text documents instead of scalable PICT images
  • ImprovedDEVONthink imports emtpy folders too if the "Optimized Hierarchy" option is disabled
  • ImprovedUnknown files copied to the database folder aren't marked with an arrow anymore (only external files display this arrow from now on)
  • ImprovedTimeout between DEVONthink and background server increased to 15 seconds (as large Word documents could fail on slow machines)
  • ImprovedPerformance of "Backup & Optimize" command and automatic optimization on quit
  • ImprovedWhite spaces before/after Wiki aliases are ignored
  • ImprovedStability of frameworks

  • Fixed"Back"/"Forward" commands and buttons did not work in imported/indexed HTML pages and after clicking on links inside captured/local HTML pages
  • Fixed"Go > Back" menu item did never work on English systems
  • Fixed"Update Captured Page" command isn't available anymore for indexed or external HTML pages
  • FixedLocal file paths were sometimes displayed as "file://localhost/path" in the URL field
  • FixedWidth of columns "Created" and "Modified" was too small to display both date and time depending on the system settings
  • FixedSplit views did not immediately update the sorting indicator after adding a new column if the view was already sorted by this column
  • FixedMajor performance leak of database initialization if the database was both large and highly unoptimized
  • FixedAliases of Wiki links always created new documents instead of jumping to the linked document
  • FixedDragging items from split views to icon views did not work
  • FixedDisplaying an image in split view of browser windows could limit the maximal window size depending on the image zoom.
  • FixedLocking a modified document window could freeze and crash the application
  • FixedSynchronizing indexed text files did not work and removed the indexed flag instead
  • FixedUngrouping groups & subgroups concurrently could result in invisible contents/groups ("Zombies")
  • FixedRare but severe bug of "Backup & Optimize"
  • FixedSeveral minor localization and user interface glitches

Obviously the previous reviewer has a problem. Click on his name and see the drivel he writes. Obviously the dude hasn't used DT. Anyhow, DT is simply the most powerful program on the Mac for researchers. Check out there website and forums and judge for yourself. I personally prefer the Pro version myself.

Here is what I think when a company continually puts out one beta after another. The company has no confidence in its product and is trying to pawn it off to the public while being able to fall back on "Hey! We said it was beta!" DEVON: If its any good, release it. If it is junk, stop using the public to do your testing for you.

All the features worth looking at are quickly becoming freely available in other existing technologies, not to mention the handful of necessary features DTP lacks. If I wanted a glorified Finder I'd turn to Path Finder. That said, DTP is hardly even glorified as the Spotlight criteria capabilities are rather sad. Oh well.
