DEVONthink is the Mac incarnation of the real paperless office. It's a notepad, outliner, scrapbook manager, information manager, freeform database, archive, image database and bookmark manager - your personal ?supplementary brain?. DEVONthink is capable of intelligently storing and organising all types of data like plain and text files, HTML, XML, PDF documents and images. Put in whatever you want, organise it, let DEVONthink search for it.

What's new in this version:

NEW Volume discounts available
NEW Possibility to create/remove dynamic Wiki links added (see commands "Format > Make/Remove Link" or same commands in contextual menus of text views or customize the toolbar). Destinations are groups/contents whose titles are equal to the link text. Clicking on such links (or "Cross Links") reveals/opens associated groups/contents in (new) windows; command-clicking always opens them in a separate window. If there's no associated content yet, DEVONthink creates a new text. In addition, "Make Link" recognizes selected Internet or email addresses and makes them clickable.
NEW Contextual menus of text view contains "Link To" submenu to link the selected text statically (independent of content and titles) to the selected group or content (this creates "Cross Links"). Note: Wiki- and Cross-links require Mac OS X 10.3.x
NEW Contextual menus of text views provide "Set As Title" (sets the selected text as the item's name) and "See " commands. The second command displays contents in the drawer containing the clicked word too.
NEW DEVONthink uses a more modern part of our kernel to store data. The revised database structure also uses more than twice as many files. Both modifications increase data reliability and performance (e.g. creating/importing/modifying are usually 2 to 4 times faster, in some rare cases up to 10 times faster and deleting is up to 20 times faster) and reduce database size (up to 45 percent), complexity and maximal memory usage (usually 10 to 30 percent).

NEW DEVONthink stores size/dpi of images/PDF documents and displays this information in column views and tooltips of icon views
NEW An icon in the status/title bar of browser/content windows displays the kind or location of the current selection (DEVONthink icon for internal contents or contents inside the "Files" folder, disk icon for local files and an Internet icon for URL links). In addition, the current URL of WebKit views and icon of websites are displayed in the status bar, the title of websites is displayed in the title bar.
NEW Locking state is displayed for outline items. Furthermore, links pointing to local files and images not copied into the database are marked with an arrow so that it's easier to distinguish links/referenced images and imported files.
NEW It's possible to drag multiple links from DEVONthink to Safari's bookmarks (transfers titles too)
NEW "Import selected Eudora messages" script by Kristopher Widholm
NEW Two QuicKey macros by Kee Hinckley to grab selection+URL from Safari or email+summary line from Eudora

Improved Exporting contents from a browser window creates "DEVONtech_storage" files which contain all additional information like URLs, comments, outline/locking states or title. DEVONthink scans for such files while importing and therefore im/exporting are completely reversable (rebuilding replicated contents and empty groups too).
Improved Exporting removes "." and "~" characters at the beginning of names
Improved Automatic flushing (displayed in a visible progress indicator)
Improved Delay after initialization is up to 100 times smaller and therefore the overall startup time 1.5 to 2 times smaller
Improved Initial position and size of image/PDF and movie windows. In addition, zooming such windows now sets the window bounds to the image size
Improved Size/dpi/zooming of images and words/characters of texts are displayed in the status bar of content windows
Improved Converting HTML/PDF documents to plain/rich text creates copies of the original
Improved PDF documents containing text are from now on only compared to other textual contents, PDF documents without text are compared to other images. This improves the accurary of "See Also"/"Classify".

Fixed Setting the database location in the properties panel didn't update file paths correct
Fixed Show In Finder/Launch commands are disabled if there's no associated file/URL
Fixed Dragging text attachments from rich text views of DEVONthink to a browser window did not import the content (created useless links instead). Also, dragging images from WebKit views or Safari to DEVONthink created a link instead of an image.
Fixed DEVONthink does not select links dragged from a WebKit view to the browser anymore
Fixed Dragging temporary files (e.g. from SnapNDrag) won't create links anymore (independent of modifiers)
Fixed Progress indicator was never visible while DT was counting the files to be imported
Fixed Harmless file glitches (like incomplete temporary data at the file end after a crash) were sometimes reported as major file errors
Fixed "Verify & Repair" could finally display file errors which where successfully repaired
Fixed "Open" command or double-clicking on an item did not save changes before opening the content in a window. In addition, DEVONthink now saves the current item of browser windows before applying "See Also"/"Classify" commands

Obviously the previous reviewer has a problem. Click on his name and see the drivel he writes. Obviously the dude hasn't used DT. Anyhow, DT is simply the most powerful program on the Mac for researchers. Check out there website and forums and judge for yourself. I personally prefer the Pro version myself.

Brass Hammer

Here is what I think when a company continually puts out one beta after another. The company has no confidence in its product and is trying to pawn it off to the public while being able to fall back on "Hey! We said it was beta!" DEVON: If its any good, release it. If it is junk, stop using the public to do your testing for you.

All the features worth looking at are quickly becoming freely available in other existing technologies, not to mention the handful of necessary features DTP lacks. If I wanted a glorified Finder I'd turn to Path Finder. That said, DTP is hardly even glorified as the Spotlight criteria capabilities are rather sad. Oh well.
