Now that OSXPlanet is Leopard-compatible, you don't need to spend your money on EarthDesk. OSXP does more and looks nicer. It's in beta. So, the settings are a bit confusing but give it a try.

Keeps on showing old cloud formations with boring regularity. Never used to do this. Is 4.0 better in this respect?

Can't recommend if it stays this buggy.

EarthDesk ReviewWhy buy Earthdesk??? - Version: 4.0.3, 2/23/2007 11:22AM PST

I've been a registered user of Earthdesk since v2.6 and upgraded at v3.0. However, I cannot justify to myself buying an upgrade to 4.0 when I am not getting any more functionality.

So I have sadly switched over to OSXPlanet, and I haven't regretted it at all. In fact, it's very good, and I haven't missed Earthdesk at all.

EarthDesk CommentaryOSX Planet vs. EarthDesk - Version: 4.0.3, 2/23/2007 08:50AM PST

I have used both of these products, and in my opinion, OSX Planet looks BETTER than EarthDesk. Both programs have almost the same functionality (I actually like the options on OSX Planet more), so I'm sticking with OSX Planet. It's not just the price; even if they were both free, my decision would be the same. But the fact that the program I like more is less expensive is just icing on the cake.

EarthDesk will have to pull something special out of their next version if they want to charge people for a program that isn't as nice as a free one.

I went to the developer's sight. There they compare their product to others. The only claim I see is "moonlight". I couldn't tell accurate moonlight or not.

Also a very small resolution difference. I have a 30" display and don't see any difference.

Cross-platform doesn't matter as there are no data documents. I guess if you have windows you could use it or find 20 or more other programs to use.

I guess in OSXPlanet, I just don't see this "clunky" and "ugly" that some here have claimed. It looks pretty good to me.

If you like this, by all means pay the money. I just don't see the advantage.

EarthDesk 4 requires Mac OS 10.4 and Quicktime 6.5.2 as a minimum.

EarthDesk ReviewBeautiful (and that's the point) - Version: 4.0.1, 2/7/2007 12:48AM PST

I have tried both OSXplanet and EarthDesk and I have settled on EarthDesk because it is just plain beautiful to look at, and isn't that the point of an app like this? I want something on my desktop that looks amazing and EarthDesk looks absolutely incredible.

Great app and well worth the $20.

I discovered EarthDesk at MacWorld and it is so incredible! The clouds and real moonlight are so beautiful that I could look at it all day long :)

To those who are comparing EarthDesk to OSX Planet - get a life. OSX Planet is ugly and clunky and looks like it was made for a PC. Well, you do get what you pay for! $19.95 is money well spent...you can't even go to dinner for that anymore.

EarthDesk CommentaryGoing To The Well Too Many Times! - Version: 4.0.1, 1/25/2007 09:50AM PST

This App was one of the first I installed back in 2001. I paid the initial reg fee and then sometime later paid another fee for an update.I feel Trigve is going to the well too often and too many times. I'm throwing in the towel, this is too much this time. I have OSXplanet and I agree it is one heck of an app and is free! Greed apparently runs rampant among some of these developers.(not all of them though, some only ask for a little more money if there has been a dramatic upgrade but this additional amount required is out of sight)

EarthDesk ReviewNot worth buying to me. - Version: 4.0.1, 1/25/2007 02:20AM PST

I agree that OSXplanet is better on top of being freeware. Not surprisingly Xeric Design doesn't agree, but to put down OSXplanet as being cluttered, when what Xeric are referring to are optional/adjustable features is silly. And of all things, implying that because OSXplanet's developer is 17 I should therefore want to pay Xeric for this programme instead is a strange sort of logic.
