netOctopus Troubleshooting ReportHow to bind clents that don't show up in NetO admin . . . - Version: 5.1, 4/7/2004 01:38PM PST

briandolan
Delete /Library/Preferences/com.netopia.netOctopus Agent.preferences on all the client machines that aren't showing up under NetO admin.
Restart the machines after you delete the prefs.
Then try to bind the clients from NetO admin.
You should be able to see the clients now. Good Luck.

netOctopus ReviewNew distribution system is incredible - Version: 5.1, 3/31/2004 08:52PM PST

The new software distribution system is amazing. It is like having your own Apple Software Update for your systems, except that you are the one in control of setting what software to update and install. I love how you just define your software packages and sit back and let the update system handle the rest automatically. This is revolutionary on the Mac and is worth the price of admission on its own, never mind all of the other things netOctopus can do!

netOctopus Troubleshooting ReportNetOctopus 4.2.1 - Version: 4.2.1, 11/1/2003 11:15AM PST

We're running NetO 4.2.1 on 19 Quicksilver Dual 1-Gig boxes (OSX, 10.2.6) and have 3 workstations where NetO will not run properly--as described by Jlussow. These machines are all CC-Clones of one another, same hardware config on all. On three the installer installs the client, however, these G4s never show to the Admininstrator. We've spent a ton of time trying to get these boxes to behave. This is all within a single subnet. Anyone know if installing as root will fix this? That's the only suggestion we've received to solve this issue. Have tried this using console a couple of times but the installer refuses to run except in the GUI. Also, anyone know how to get the snmp NIB to install without an error? There's no documentation for this component. Daniel

We have over 100 machines that we manage with netOctopus and just downloaded the new version. The FileScripter stuff is the best way to distribute software to multiple machines, bar none. Netopia has also been very responsive when we've needed support.

this product. My company spent $3500 less than a month ago and now I am told I need to spend another $1300 for the "reduced price" upgrade. The funny thing is netOctopus still doesn't "see" 12 of the 39 boxes it is installed in. The admin software shows the name of these computers and the agent version but the rest is "???". Netopia doesn't seem to care unless you consider one email a week caring. I bought this software thinking that it would work and it doesn't and never has. Netopia tech support sucks unless you pay for it.e

couple of postings, Netopia is the one of the few companies that still offers free unlimited phone and email support. Paid support is also available. Paid support entitles customers to priority support, includes free upgrades for the duration of the service, and access to free additional utilities and enhancements. In addition, customers are given free upgrades to new releases if the product was purchased within 30 days of the new release. Netopia makes every effort to promptly address every issue reported by customers. However, issues that cannot be duplicated, are more difficult to address.

would be a different person saying that I have had no problems getting the serial number. I just double checked and it is indeed there on 4 of 5 machines. The one it does not get the serial number on is very old. I do like NetOctopus, but for ensuring files get distributed, FileWave is the better option. For doing the other 80% of administration, NetOctopus is better.

A Nony Mouse
don't agree- we tried everything with Netopia and have met with them personally several times to address such issues and unless you log in to a Mac and launch System Profiler you get nothing. Its even been admitted that you need to enter in data like that to have it availavle online. Running scripts and creating installers to launch upon seed is also a bad idea. I want to send my image out to Macs and have them updated according to my image which NetO doesn't do. Creating a self running Applescript based installer is not an option. Especially when most of the client fail to respond to the admin and the admin fails to report dropped connections leaving you with Macs that have partial software packages and hosed systems. No way..

are mistaken about several things in your post. First of all, you do not have to enter any data into a netOctopus client before using it. netOctopus will automatically retrieve all data about a client when you scan it with your administrator application. Secondly, netOctopus uses the same method to get a machine's serial number as Apple System Profiler does, so on virtually all machines with New World ROM (that is, anything since the original iMac) the serial number will show up automatically when you scan. You do not need to manually enter it on a client unless you did a low-level format of the client's hard disk at some point in the past, or the client machine is very old.
