Product Description:

netOctopus, the smart multi-platform system management solution, guarantees that your network becomes a strategic asset. From remote software installation to system configuration and comprehensive inventories, netOctopus gives you the power to be more productive in less time. As a scalable solution, netOctopus is equally effective in a network of ten computers, or in large corporations where hundreds, even thousands of PC and Macintosh computers are managed from a single workstation. It is the system administration program that lets you "see" every workstation on your network from whatever platform you choose for your desktop. Then "reach out" and manage them efficiently. Gather over 400 hardware, software and system details instantly.

What's new in this version:

The Software Delivery System (SDS) is the major new feature in netOctopus 5.1. It now lets you perform software installations on client computers not only directly from the administrator computer, as before, but also offers you the choice to offload this task to a system of conveniently located staging servers, i.e., file servers tied together by a central coordinating server. The SDS is basically like having control of your own "Automatic Software Update" system for all the computers you manage. The SDS is very powerful, flexible, and fully cross-platform, and it supports many different installer formats, including OS X packages, OS 9 installers, VISE installers, MSI installers for Windows, and more.

You control software policies based on system profile, business need or any other classification you may choose. The centralized Distribution Center Server (DCS) acts as traffic cop, directing agent computers to the appropriate software download, balancing server loads across the network, and logging all installations, or problems.

Managed computers check for updates at regular intervals which you define. End users are simply presented with a software update window, and, depending on the priority of the installation, may reschedule, or install it when presented. Administrators also have the option to make the installation both mandatory and silent. Interrupted installations will resume, and all successes and failures are logged.

netOctopus Troubleshooting ReportHow to bind clents that don't show up in NetO admin . . . - Version: 5.1, 4/7/2004 01:38PM PST

Delete /Library/Preferences/com.netopia.netOctopus Agent.preferences on all the client machines that aren't showing up under NetO admin.
Restart the machines after you delete the prefs.
Then try to bind the clients from NetO admin.
You should be able to see the clients now. Good Luck.

The new software distribution system is amazing. It is like having your own Apple Software Update for your systems, except that you are the one in control of setting what software to update and install. I love how you just define your software packages and sit back and let the update system handle the rest automatically. This is revolutionary on the Mac and is worth the price of admission on its own, never mind all of the other things netOctopus can do!

netOctopus Troubleshooting ReportNetOctopus 4.2.1 - Version: 4.2.1, 11/1/2003 11:15AM PST

We're running NetO 4.2.1 on 19 Quicksilver Dual 1-Gig boxes (OSX, 10.2.6) and have 3 workstations where NetO will not run properly--as described by Jlussow. These machines are all CC-Clones of one another, same hardware config on all. On three the installer installs the client, however, these G4s never show to the Admininstrator. We've spent a ton of time trying to get these boxes to behave. This is all within a single subnet. Anyone know if installing as root will fix this? That's the only suggestion we've received to solve this issue. Have tried this using console a couple of times but the installer refuses to run except in the GUI. Also, anyone know how to get the snmp NIB to install without an error? There's no documentation for this component. Daniel
