SafeShred ReviewIt's not necessary. - Version: 2.1.10, 11/11/2003 03:15PM PST

Panther has this feature, and Stuffit Deluxe has had it for over a year now. If you're still using Jaguar and don't have Stuffit Deluxe, this would be worth getting, but otherwise save your money.

SafeShred CommentaryIt works well, and customer support is the best I have found.. - Version: 2.1.9, 10/26/2003 11:20AM PST

I have been using Codetek products for the past couple of years, and have found them to work as promised, the user interface is easy to follow, and what I have been most impressed with is the customer support and service I have gotten any time I have needed assistance. Never, and I mean never, have I ever found a company that that will go out of their way as much as this one has. I recently had an instance where I needed some information regarding registration issues after installing some software. I got a quick reply back, giving me the information I needed, and more.

It seems I had FORGOTTEN about purchasing this same piece of software a year or so back, and I was informed that my credit card would be issued a credit..that was good news of course, but the best news was that I had purchased their suite of products also, and would not be charged for my most recent purchase. I know many of you might laugh at someone who can "forget" what they purchased, and yes, I felt like an idiot, but the point I am trying to make is that this company could have gone ahead and charged me again, and I would never have known the difference. It happens all the time. In this age of automated this, and automated that, it is refreshing to find a company that will respond to issues, correct them, and do the RIGHT thing.

I have used other products for my online safety, but after this incident, I am going to look seriously at using Codetek products for all my future needs. I figure if they are this honest and upfront about billing issues, then they are going to make the best products they know how. I appreciate their ethics.

How about "Secure Delete" which is a free part of Stuffit Drag & Drop? Isn't it doing the same thing as Safe Shred?

Extreme 2.1.2 and it solved the icon recovery issue that twarted previous versions. CodeTek support has been great resolving this issue. I assume the free version does the same but it is not mine to check. But I would advertise anyone installing a shredder to test it.

the thumbnails resilience (see previous). things may not be that bad. I did some testing and it looks like the shredded files (no more thumbnails and titles) disappear overnight, probably with the Apple overnight auto-maintenance. As a matter of fact, all the file disappears, text files titles as well. So maybe thumbnails act the same way that filenames do - they do not get mangled with the free version of SafeShred. But why do they disappear with Apple overnight bckg maintenance, I don't know.

We have been unable to reproduce your issues using Norton UnErase, and we have not received similar reports from our customers. Please contact us at support@codetek.com, as we would like to get as much information as we can about the possible bug you are reporting. We state on our SafeShred product page that SafeShred Free and SafeShred Pro do not "mangle filenames". This functionality is only provided in SafeShred Xtreme.

tests. with the free version, not the Pro or Xtreme ones. On my internal HD, Norton Utilities Unerease shows titles of text files that should be shedded "to pieces". They keep the same amount of bytes. One can recover them, open them and see the overwriting characters but not the shredded text. With regard to picture files, Norton Utilities Unerease shows their titles, Once recovered, one can see very clear icons of thosepicture files although they won’t open. But what can utilities more powerful than Norton do from a file icon? If confirmed, I think CodeTeck should inform customers of these particularities of SafeShred . still_alive

you say is true, then what the #%^&@ is someone supposed to do who has used it and relied on it? Do they have to first recover the files, then reshred them with some shredding program that works? This is a scandal if true. Can anyone else confirm this outrage?
