Product Description:

MegaHAL is an AI conversation simulator, originally written by Jason Hutchens for the 1998 Loebner AI Contest, that allows users to talk to a psychotic AI. Unlike traditional conversation simulators (see Eliza), MegaHAL learns from what users tell it, and can build up a vocabulary on its own. MegaHAL can also learn other languages, and it can speak to you with any voice you have installed on your Mac. MegaHAL's dialogue can invoke a whole range of emotions; you can never predict what it's going to tell you!

This is the same version of MegaHAL that comes with Debian Linux. It's been Carbonized to run under Mac OS X. MegaHAL is distributed under the GNU Public License; source code is included.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC
  • Mac OS X 10.3.9
  • Mac OS X 10.3
  • Mac OS X 10.2
  • Mac OS X 10.1
  • Mac OS X 10.0
  • Mac OS Classic

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS 8.1 or higher
  • or
  • Mac OS X 10.0 or higher

Editor's Notes:

From the developer:
"I should give credit where credit is due. MegaHAL was originally written by Jason Hutchens, and is now being maintained by a volunteer team on SourceForge. Paul Baxter and Doug Turner did the original MegaHAL Mac port. I made the changes necessary to Carbonize MegaHAL. The "official" MegaHAL page is: http://www.megahal.net/"

MegaHAL/Mac ReviewNice little application - Version: 9.0.3, 5/27/2004 08:25PM PST

This is a really funny Artificial Intelligence application that originally came with Debian Linux.

You may have tried other AI applications in the past such as Eliza, but this one is different because it remembers what you feed it. You might have a conversation with it where you mention "The sky is blue!" A few days later, you might come back and say "The sky is orange!" and it would reply "The sky is blue!"

Four stars for the not-very-OS-X interface, but that isn't the developer's fault, he's just carbonizing an already-written app. If AppleScript was used to allow MegaHal to be an AIM robot over iChat, this application would be 5+ stars.

MegaHAL/Mac ReviewI must say… - Version: 9.0.3, 8/24/2002 08:53PM PST

ntafts' story is quite funny. And thats what got me interested in this little program. It is kinda difficult to deal with the "learning curve" it has to go through but I figure by the end of all this, I'll just find this as amusing as tetris. And Tetris is a classic that I could play four hours.
