throttled ReviewDANGEROUS: Throttled Turns OFF MOSX Firewall - Version: 0.5, 9/12/2008 06:39PM PST

Note folks, this is still beta software. Usually I would not give a star rating to a beta program, but this is an exception. I don't believe anyone should be using Throttled if what I discovered is a universal problem.

Good stuff: I found setting up the CLI version of Throttled to be easy thanks to the very good notes that are provided within the script itself. Bravo! (Always be sure to keep a locked source copy of the provided script and only work on a copy). I had no problem running it and was quite pleased to find that Throttled installs a startup item so that the script reruns itself at each startup. Who needs the Pro version GUI? Not me!

However, I no longer use Throttled for one critical reason:

BAD STUFF: Throttled turns OFF the Mac OS X Firewall. My testing is only in 10.4.11. I will be further testing in Leopard. Why it does this is beyond my comprehension. The fact that it does this is DANGEROUS. No way am I using Throttled again until this nasty blunder is solved. It comes down to this: The possibility of my Mac being invaded and compromised is not worth minor speedups in Internet access.

Conclusion: Watch this software for a solution to the Firewall blunder. Meanwhile: DO NOT USE Throttle.

Caveat: Someone please find a workaround for this dangerous problem or prove to me that it is harmless. I'd like to champion this program.

throttled ReviewTheir idea of support is calling them via whois phone #! - Version: 0.4.6, 7/17/2007 10:59PM PST

This is a great product, an absolute must for those who want to run a Mac OS X server on a limited internet pipe. But if you don't like spending a day or more troubleshooting the program to try and get it to work this isn't for you...this wouldn't have been a problem if the support actually existed. There is NO support, I emailed them during business hours and got no reply. When I paid for the pro version of throttled I didn't even get my serial # until I did a whois on their domain and called them...if you rely on support then you may find it worth your time to avoid this product and all products this company makes as there is NO SUPPORT! But other then that this product is great, just takes some time getting used to how it works. TIP: If you have something like a FTP server which consumes a huge amount of ports like I did and which results in the throttled port being in use you will not be able to use the gui. Instead you will have to download the command prompt version, create the ipfw rules yourself and then start the throttled process yourself. It's not that hard if you don't mind reading the documentation and startup script for info on how to do both...

But again there is no support and since they seem to promise support this is a big no no to me...is anyone there?!

throttled Commentarythe throttled tools DO work with 10.4.3 - Version: 0.4.2, 12/26/2005 03:26PM PST

I too had some initial issues and questions about throttled (and Throttled Pro) on my Tiger system. But after doing some tests, examining the results and then sending an e-mail to the developer got everything working just fine.

The bottomline of why this product initially had trouble with my Tiger installation is that I already had several firewall rules in place. Throttled really doesn't know how best to automatically place its own rules within this context. For some it might work right away... for others the new firewall rules added may have no impact at all.

If you seem to find this product not "working", please examine your own firewall setups and try to place throttled's rules *before* other firewall rules that take effect even before the new ones get a chance. For me, I had to change my rule number to 00005 *and* delete a "check-state" from rule 00001, moving it to 00006. Throttled rules are now working for me.

The developer was very responsive to my e-mailed questions and suggestions for improvement. I couldn't ask for anything more.

/Marty

Hi everybody.

Throttled is a perfect software. If you want to stop or start easily the engine, you can try my little utilities :

http://softwares.bajram.com/utilities/#Throttled_switch

And if you want more, buy the Throttled Pro shareware :-)

I paid the $20 shareware fee and sent 3 emails to support w/o an answer. On Mac os x 10.4.2 with wireless connection throttle does NOT seem to be limiting bandwidth no matter what my settings....

throttled Troubleshooting ReportCauses system hang when rebooting OSX tiger - Version: 0.3.2, 4/29/2005 10:01AM PST

I love throttled and I used it for osx panther, but with osx tiger it will cause the system to hang when you try to shutdown or reboot. Right now I get around this problem by killing the throttled process before I shutdown. But this is a pain to do. Any chance for an update of this program?

Forget Carrafix. Throttled is the App of the Hour. With the priotize Option it is possible to have heavy UL and no DL-Problems. The Speed is like u have no UL. Thumbs up!!!

throttled Review2 month update: Friendly support, but frustrating and useless program - Version: 0.3.2, 12/5/2004 09:57PM PST

Just wanted to check back in & update my original post below.

I do have to commend the developers... even though the program is free, they happily went back and forth through a couple of rounds of thech support emails with me. Ultimately, they claimed I was setting it up right. But I never got this program to do anything for me. It doesn't cap my upload rates, or do anything at all. Ever.

I am honestly mystified at all these posts that seem to like this useless program so much. I assume there is either some necessary technical information which is not included in the documentation and which every one of these people but me is aware of, or perhaps this is those programs that works very well sometimes but other times doesn't work at all.

Anyway, buyer beware. It's a free program, but unless it works for you right off the bat (or you know much more about Unix than I do) you may be in for a great deal of frustration and wasted time trying to get this program to do anything before you finally give up. Though the developer's help was appreciated, this was a total waste of my time. Zero stars.

If anybody has a config that they KNOW works for Bittorrent, 100% of the time, a post would be appreciated. Beyond that, I'm done wasting time trying to figure this useless bit of nothing out.

PS. In response to a comment below, I know Bittorrent allows you to cap individual torrents' upload rates. I am after an overall cap for the who program, not for individual torrents. That is what i was led to believe this program did.
