"SBook5 is now an abandoned project. The complete source code, including the AI engine, is now being made available to the community."

I really hope someone picks this up. SBook5 is a unique alternative for those who feel constrained by Apple's Address Book. It has served me excellently for years, but is in need of maintenance: basically very solid, but some of the peripheral functions don't work quite as they should. It deserves a future, because nothing else out there does the same thing quite so well.

SBook5 Commentaryother uses for sbook - Version: 5.1.010, 11/23/2006 04:33AM PST

I would like to use sbook as a French English Dictionary. In many ways it is ideally suited for this but it doesn't recognize accent marks when looking for a word, which means that every word must be enterred twice, once without an accent to be recognized and then with an accent to be learned. This is both inelegant and adds extra work. Can this problem be fixed in the current version, or might it be fixed in future versions.

SBook5 ReviewUnable to close or quit on 10.3.8 - Version: 5.1.010, 10/5/2005 11:32AM PST

Battered Powerbook
Overall I like the design of this program, and it seems smart and secure enough, but although I am able to save my changes, I can't close, quit, or select a good number of other menu items including About Sbook5 and a bunch of other things.

I have to Force Quit every time. Annoying.

SBook5 ReviewQuick review of SBook5 - Version: 5.1.010, 12/9/2004 07:28AM PST

Cool, fast, clear & smart! I wish I could change the typeface of the main view - making all of them smaller, but it seems I can only change individual entries, one at a time.

I could not get it to import a TDF of 5600 contacts, from an old PIM which were exported as TDF. The sBook app recognized what kind of file it was, gave me two choices before importing them (concatenate first-last names, which I had already done in the exported TDF, & ignore the first line or first entry since it might be column-fieldname headers, which it was and which I did want to import as a test).

I wish I could Sort the main list by email address once I have shown them - as a way to cull out duplicates that are NOT duplicates in a literal sense.

Wish that HELP was 'available for sBook5' so I could evaluate it more fully.

This kind of smart text parsing should be part and parcel of every PIM program from Address Book to Entourage. Big thanks to the developer - and even more for doing it for the community. How about doing something similar for iCal?

The application is indeed fast and looks stable. However, the dial, print and e-mail buttons are to light, thus, with a PB it happens that I just move the cursor over the phone icon and the application initiates the modem or the printer (and so on). I want to "shift click" or "command click" or at least "double click" on the command. Finally, can SBook work with iCal ?????? I want SBook to call a phone number(s) and send e-mail(s) when an iCal event is approaching. This will advance my BP into a perfect secretary.

This is fantastic. Just what I was looking for. Plan to use for my office and home too. Feature rich, especially with envelopes, labels, telephone. Slick, especially since I have Panther (which is also fantastic!)

SBook5 ReviewI love it - Version: 5.17, 12/13/2003 06:17AM PST

I just discovered SBook5. My only complaint is the name of the application. The author of this brilliant little utility surely could come up with a better phrase.

Nevertheless this program has all the ease of use and editing that Apple's Address Book (AB) lacks. A note to Apple: Drop AB and adopt SBook5.
