Product Description:

SBook5 is an extremely fast, AI-based personal information manager for computers running the Mac OS X operating system. SBook5 organizes your information into pages, or entries, with one page for each person, company, or thing that you need to track. Each of these entries can have any number of postal addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, or other information. SBook recognizes the information that you put into each entry and allows you to intelligently manage it.

SBook5 automatically tells the difference between an entry that represents a person and one that represents a corporation, and sorts accordingly. The database then sorts entries as you would, if you only had the time. SBook5's proprietary searching algorithms search in the blink of an eye. Just type a few characters from the person's name, and SBook5 instantly finds the right entry. Don't know the name? No problem -- SBook5 automatically downshifts to full-text search mode, automatically finding all entries that match what you type. Multiple people can have the same SBook5 database open at the same time; when one person saves their file, the changes are automatically reflected in all other instances of the application running on other computers.

Besides incredibly fast search, SBook5 can also dial the phone, print envelopes, mailing labels, and integrate with other applications. And it has an incredibly responsive developer who is always looking for new ideas.

What's new in this version:

  • Fixes incompatibility with latest MacOS release.
  • Fixes memory-leak bug.
  • Adopts a plug-in architecture. Source code for three plug-ins (envelope printer, phone dialer, and address book printer) is included in the distribution.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.3

"SBook5 is now an abandoned project. The complete source code, including the AI engine, is now being made available to the community."

I really hope someone picks this up. SBook5 is a unique alternative for those who feel constrained by Apple's Address Book. It has served me excellently for years, but is in need of maintenance: basically very solid, but some of the peripheral functions don't work quite as they should. It deserves a future, because nothing else out there does the same thing quite so well.

SBook5 Commentaryother uses for sbook - Version: 5.1.010, 11/23/2006 04:33AM PST

I would like to use sbook as a French English Dictionary. In many ways it is ideally suited for this but it doesn't recognize accent marks when looking for a word, which means that every word must be enterred twice, once without an accent to be recognized and then with an accent to be learned. This is both inelegant and adds extra work. Can this problem be fixed in the current version, or might it be fixed in future versions.

SBook5 ReviewUnable to close or quit on 10.3.8 - Version: 5.1.010, 10/5/2005 11:32AM PST

Battered Powerbook
Overall I like the design of this program, and it seems smart and secure enough, but although I am able to save my changes, I can't close, quit, or select a good number of other menu items including About Sbook5 and a bunch of other things.

I have to Force Quit every time. Annoying.
