Project Timer ReviewVarious issues - Version: 1.4.2b3, 5/24/2006 05:30PM PST

Don't know where the VT version list of 1.4.2b3 comes from - a download from the site got me version 1.1 and even it said there were no updates to be had. Good program if not a wee bit buggy for $50 bucks. Couldn't let them know about it becuase their mailbox was full (that's a bad omen). Here's what I encountered (maybe they'll see it here since they won't get the email).
-------
Just bought the Pro version. Love it but find it a bit buggy here and there. Thought I'd let you know what I have found. I got my billing and invoice done, but at first blush, it needs a wee bit o'tweaking.

I love the Address Book integration but HATE the way the Company Name comes before the Person's Name. That should be an option: None, Before, After. I like my names in Last name, First name order, as set in AB; if that is readable, you should display as such. If not, make it a configurable option.

I have a LOT of people in my AB that aren't clients. Yes, I can limit them by using a list, but a better interface wouldn't be a Drop Down List that spans my screen (I have a 20" LCD) but an input field I can type in which also has a drop-down control, but limits the height of the list to say, 20 entries and does a pre-find in the list to the closest matching entry before it appears. Would make data entry go much faster.

Oh, and in regards to Data Entry - what's with the lack of a TAB KEY?! It moves the focus from text field to text field during timer entry but disappears when the focus is in the date and time fields. The sequence is definitely a bit odd.

While editing my invoice, pressing Page Setup makes the tool pallet disappear and just as the printer setup window drops down, it vanishes! Pressing it a second time brings up a printer setup sheet (not window). Only this sheet isn't Modal - not good. Also, I have to click the close button 4-5 times before it disappears. Odd.

After printing, a highlight marquee appears in the Invoice window but shifted to the lower-right. Can't move it and clicking elsewhere on the invoice un-highlights it but it is still there. Clicking on it re-highlights it. Odder.

Somehow, in doing all this, the ability to CLOSE the Invoice window vanished. It isn't dirty so the bubble is clear but there isn't an X so I cannot close it. I use APPLE+W to close the window and Oh! Look! there's the printer setup window that dropped down and vanished! It also takes several clicks to close. As a test, I opened the invoice from scratch and pressed setup. The setup sheet vanished but I moved the window off to the side and I still couldn't see it. It is like it is docked BEHIND the Invoice window.

The tab sequence of the fields on the formatter palette also needs fixing.

Open the Header, Formatting and Data palette and you'll see a drop down control just floating just above and to the lower right of the Date drop down in the Data palette. I think it is the DEV Header Style drop down. Don't know what its for. It is empty but clickable and only visible when those three palettes are open.

In the preferences / clients panel, I clicked on the user from my AB and clicked Make Client but nothing happened. I did it like three times. I left the window and came back later to find my client as a client - four times. Then trying to add another person from my AB - it did nothing. No adding, no duplicating. Am I doing something wrong?

Project Timer ReviewWish they would update this in place of Project Timer Lite - Version: 1.4.2b3, 4/14/2006 08:24AM PST

I've used this ever since it came out and have yet to find something that works better for me. I've tried Project Timer Lite but while it had some nice additional features it was more cumbersome for the way I work and it frequently lost my data.I found the developer helpful and responsive but they could never resolve my problems with this and from the current state of Project Timer Lite it looks like they might have given up trying.

I currently use Project Timer 1.4 2b3 under Mac OS 10.3.9 and as long as I keep the following things in mind it works fine for me.

1) Keep it closed until a time change is needed -- the longer its open the slower it gets.
2) Limit its records to one week's worth -- the more records the more sluggish it is. Every week I copy the records over to a monthy PT file.
3) When records get out of order go into the ones that have a blank activity column and just add a space.
4) Periodically edit the prefs file to get rid of extraneous categories that sometimes appear.

Under normal circumstances I would give this three stars for the problems indicated above but becuase of its ease of use for the way I work compared to other applications in this category I'm giving it an additonal star.

Project Timer ReviewDon't believe in love at first sight - Version: 1.4.2b3, 4/15/2004 10:14AM PST

I bought the license on april 9. 4 days later I'm highly disappointed. Some of the functions do not work at all. SoftScript is not responding to the questions in the support forum. I've also e-mailed and asked for a refund. No surprise - they haven't responded to that either. Even talked to my bank to try to challenge the payment - can't do that for faulty goods. Talka about catch 22.

I'd rather have given the $50 to charity.
