Product Description:

Recently rated 5 mice by MacUser UK and 4.5 mice by Macworld, Default Folder X attaches a toolbar to your Open and Save dialogs in any OS X-native application. The toolbar gives you fast access to various folders and commands. You just click on the buttons to go to your favorite and recently used folders, manage the folders and files shown in the list, and make changes to your settings.

Default Folder also adds the ability to see zoomable previews in Open dialogs and to save Spotlight comments and OpenMeta tags for documents in the Save As dialog, while you're saving them.

What's new in this version:

Default Folder X 4.3.1 delivers better compatibility with Snow Leopard as well as a number of improvements and fixes. If you are installing or planning to install Snow Leopard, please make sure to upgrade your copy of Default Folder X first. A compatibility problem in copies of Default Folder X older than version 4.3 could cause crashes with Snow Leopard.

  • The files and folders in submenus of the Recent Folders menu are now sorted in the same way as the recent folders (by date or by name).
  • Default Folder X now supports Safari plugins that bring up Open and Save As dialogs in Snow Leopard. This ensures that Default Folder X's controls appear correctly when attaching files to messages in Gmail.
  • Contextual menus in Open and Save dialogs now work in column and icon views as well as list view in Snow Leopard.
  • In Snow Leopard, Default Folder X would sometimes draw a white square in the menubar where its icon was supposed to be. This has been fixed.
  • A problem has been fixed in which Default Folder X would not hide its controls when an options panel came up on top of an Open or Save dialog. This primarily affected Final Cut Pro, QuickTime Player 7, and other applications that export files using QuickTime.
  • Corrected a performance problem that made Default Folder X's own "Get Info" command bring up its file dialog very slowly.
  • Added an option to automatically open all of your favorite folders in the Finder when you switch folder sets. Option click on the Settings button in the Default Folder X preference pane and turn on "OpenActiveFolderSet".
  • Added a "lefty" option to put the toolbar on the left side of Open and Save dialogs instead of on the right. Option click on the Settings button in the Default Folder X preference pane and turn on "ToolbarOnLeft".
  • Fixed the alignment and spacing of buttons in the Info panel below Open dialogs.
  • Macintoshes based on the PowerPC G3 processor are once again supported.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.5 Intel

Default Folder X ReviewGood product but one very bad thing.... - Version: 4.3.2, 11/1/2009 09:33AM PST

So Default Folder works great. I'm a registered user and recommend it. That being said, the downside is that they frequently want you to update their product, and this is the type of thing you want to stay on top of. Updates are complicated and cumbersome. You click "yes I want to download," then go to their web page and have to hunt for the small download link on their odd web page, then download the installer, then run the installer, click OK, then you have to log out and in to have it take effect. This happens frequently enough. They could make it easier and I have asked and they acknowledge this is something they could improve but they cannot be bothered to do it yet. Because of this thing, I give it 3 stars, as it is a frequent and significant annoyance they could fix but don't.
