Product Description:

Default Folder X attaches a toolbar to the right side of the Open and Save dialogs in any OS X-native application (both Carbon and Cocoa). The toolbar gives you fast access to various folders and commands. You just click on the buttons to go to your favorite and recently used folders, manage the folders and files shown in the list, and make changes to your settings.
Default Folder also fixes a number of problems in Open and Save dialogs, allowing you to select files by typing their names, putting the path listing back in the top menu, and correcting bugs in scrolling column views.

What's new in this version:

  • Fixed an intermittent crash that could occur during application launch.
  • Corrected an intermittent bug that could cause System Preferences to lock up when switching away from the Default Folder X preferences.
  • Fixed the "Finder-click" feature so that the placement of Finder window "shadows" is correct when running on Jaguar. It used to be wrong in some cases.
  • Help tags no longer get "stuck" on-screen.
  • The Default Folder X toolbar no longer disappears when you hit the return key in an Open dialog in a Cocoa application.
  • Default Folder X dialogs (New Folder, Get Info, etc.) no longer prevent access to the language menu.
  • The contents of folders are now initially shown in the rightmost column of file dialogs in Cocoa applications, even when only 2 columns are showing.
  • Default Folder X is now localized for Japanese, French and English users.

Default Folder X ReviewGood product but one very bad thing.... - Version: 4.3.2, 11/1/2009 09:33AM PST

So Default Folder works great. I'm a registered user and recommend it. That being said, the downside is that they frequently want you to update their product, and this is the type of thing you want to stay on top of. Updates are complicated and cumbersome. You click "yes I want to download," then go to their web page and have to hunt for the small download link on their odd web page, then download the installer, then run the installer, click OK, then you have to log out and in to have it take effect. This happens frequently enough. They could make it easier and I have asked and they acknowledge this is something they could improve but they cannot be bothered to do it yet. Because of this thing, I give it 3 stars, as it is a frequent and significant annoyance they could fix but don't.
