Product Description:

Default Folder X attaches a toolbar to the right side of the Open and Save dialogs in any OS X-native application (both Carbon and Cocoa). The toolbar gives you fast access to various folders and commands. You just click on the buttons to go to your favorite and recently used folders, manage the folders and files shown in the list, and make changes to your settings.
Default Folder also fixes a number of problems in Open and Save dialogs, "rebounding" back to the last selected file, putting the path listing back in the top menu, and correcting bugs in scrolling column views.

What's new in this version:

  • Hotkeys for Favorite folders can now be used in the Finder, not just in Open and Save dialogs.
  • Recent folders can now be sorted alphabetically as well as chronologically.
  • The "click in a Finder window" feature can now be set to function only when a modifier key is held down.
  • Selecting folders from Default Folder X's menus can now optionally go to that directory in a Terminal window.
  • The Get Info command can now use FileBuddy as well as Super Get Info, XRay and FileExaminer for expanded Get Info capabilities .
  • Holding down modifier keys temporarily changes the sorting of folders in Default Folder X's menus.
  • Folders can now be deleted from the menus by holding down the delete or backspace key and selecting them.
  • Fixed horizontal scrolling problems in file dialogs when viewing networked drives.
  • Fixed a crashes in MT-Newswatcher and Meshwork whenever Default Folder X brought up a dialog.
  • Fixed a hang that occurred when saving in StageTools MovingPicture.
  • There is no longer a single black pixel displayed above the Default Folder X toolbar on the side of Open and Save dialogs.
  • The registration reminders have been made a bit less persistent.

Default Folder X ReviewGood product but one very bad thing.... - Version: 4.3.2, 11/1/2009 09:33AM PST

So Default Folder works great. I'm a registered user and recommend it. That being said, the downside is that they frequently want you to update their product, and this is the type of thing you want to stay on top of. Updates are complicated and cumbersome. You click "yes I want to download," then go to their web page and have to hunt for the small download link on their odd web page, then download the installer, then run the installer, click OK, then you have to log out and in to have it take effect. This happens frequently enough. They could make it easier and I have asked and they acknowledge this is something they could improve but they cannot be bothered to do it yet. Because of this thing, I give it 3 stars, as it is a frequent and significant annoyance they could fix but don't.
