Product Description:

Default Folder X attaches a toolbar to the right side of the Open and Save dialogs in any OS X-native application (both Carbon and Cocoa). The toolbar gives you fast access to various folders and commands. You just click on the buttons to go to your favorite and recently used folders, manage the folders and files shown in the list, and make changes to your settings.

Default Folder also fixes a number of problems in Open and Save dialogs, "rebounding" back to the last selected file, putting the path listing back in the top menu, and correcting bugs in scrolling column views.

What's new in this version:

  • You can now click on greyed-out filenames in Save dialogs to copy the name of an existing file.
  • Hotkeys for Favorite folders can now be used within any application, not just when you are using the Finder.
  • You can now set a single default folder for all applications.
  • Default Folder X can now be configured to switch to a default folder every time a file dialog is used.
  • If there are two Finder windows with the same name, the Finder Window menu will also show the name of their parent folders to disambiguate them.
  • When opening windows in the Finder, Default Folder X would sometimes start up another copy of the Finder. This has been fixed.
  • Fixed problems with Cocoa Open and Save dialogs sometimes failing to respond to keyboard input.
  • Added special "ExcludedApplicationFolders" setting to exclude all apps within certain directories. You must turn off Default Folder X and edit the com.stclairsoft.DefaultFolderX.plist file in order to modify this setting.
  • Cmd-option-F now works correctly in Cocoa file dialogs.
  • Fixed a bug in the Default Folder X preference pane that could cause hangs when the selected favorite folder wasn't available.
  • Speed has been increased significantly in Carbon apps when displaying folders containing lots of files.
  • Improved the display of command keys in preference pane.

Default Folder X ReviewGood product but one very bad thing.... - Version: 4.3.2, 11/1/2009 09:33AM PST

So Default Folder works great. I'm a registered user and recommend it. That being said, the downside is that they frequently want you to update their product, and this is the type of thing you want to stay on top of. Updates are complicated and cumbersome. You click "yes I want to download," then go to their web page and have to hunt for the small download link on their odd web page, then download the installer, then run the installer, click OK, then you have to log out and in to have it take effect. This happens frequently enough. They could make it easier and I have asked and they acknowledge this is something they could improve but they cannot be bothered to do it yet. Because of this thing, I give it 3 stars, as it is a frequent and significant annoyance they could fix but don't.
