Product Description:

Winner of the 2002 Macworld Editors' Choice award for Best System Enhancement Utility, Default Folder X attaches a toolbar to the right side of the Open and Save dialogs in any OS X-native application (both Carbon and Cocoa). The toolbar gives you fast access to various folders and commands. You just click on the buttons to go to your favorite and recently used folders, manage the folders and files shown in the list, and make changes to your settings.

Default Folder also fixes a number of problems in Open and Save dialogs, "rebounding" back to the last selected file, putting the path listing back in the top menu, and correcting bugs in scrolling column views.

What's new in this version:

  • Aliases in the Favorites folder that pointed to unmounted disks crashed Default Folder X. This has been fixed.
  • Corrected a problem that caused Save As dialogs to crash in OmniGroup applications (OmniWeb, OmniGraffle, OmniOutliner) and in the Desktop & Screen Saver preference pane.
  • Icons are now properly displayed in the Default Folder X toolbar when Default Folder X has been installed in a folder to which the user does not have write-access.
  • Default Folder X no longer shows volumes with zero size in its menus.
  • The Home and Desktop menu items in the Computer submenu are now hierarchical.
  • Removed the Computer->Computer menu item. There was no point in using it when your disks were listed right below the "Computer" menu item anyway.
  • The items in the Utility menu in Default Folder X's toolbar now update correctly when you switch to the Desktop.
  • Keyboard navigation, including the right arrow key, has been fixed in Carbon applications.
  • Hierarchical menus now list the "display names" of files, rather than their true names, so files with hidden extensions (including ".app") will no longer have extensions in Default Folder X's menus.
  • Improved performance when building hierarchical menus.
  • For performance reasons, Default Folder X no longer shows icons in its hierarchical menus when displaying files on a server.

WARNING: Versions of Default Folder X prior to 1.9 are incompatible with Mac OS X Panther. Do not install Panther without first upgrading to Default Folder X 1.9. If you have installed Panther and all applications are quitting as soon as you launch them, log in while holding down the Shift key. After doing so, disable Default Folder X in System Preferences or download and install Default Folder X 1.9.2b1 immediately.

I've used this utility since the early days, pre OSX and it's extremely useful. I'm a minimalist when it comes to software that enhances the OS but this is in the top 5 list. In combination with good tagging software (such as Tags or freeware alternatives) it's an effective combination for simplifying organization and finding things quickly. Highly recommended. On a critical note, the settings could be more clear & distinct. A built in upgrader which downloads and installs for you (like Adium) would be nice but hardly deal-breakers. Still worthy of 4.5 stars!

So Default Folder works great. I'm a registered user and recommend it. That being said, the downside is that they frequently want you to update their product, and this is the type of thing you want to stay on top of. Updates are complicated and cumbersome. You click "yes I want to download," then go to their web page and have to hunt for the small download link on their odd web page, then download the installer, then run the installer, click OK, then you have to log out and in to have it take effect. This happens frequently enough. They could make it easier and I have asked and they acknowledge this is something they could improve but they cannot be bothered to do it yet. Because of this thing, I give it 3 stars, as it is a frequent and significant annoyance they could fix but don't.
