Product Description:

Winner of the 2002 Macworld Editors' Choice award for Best System Enhancement Utility, Default Folder X attaches a toolbar to the right side of the Open and Save dialogs in any OS X-native application (both Carbon and Cocoa). The toolbar gives you fast access to various folders and commands. You just click on the buttons to go to your favorite and recently used folders, manage the folders and files shown in the list, and make changes to your settings.

Default Folder also fixes a number of problems in Open and Save dialogs, "rebounding" back to the last selected file, putting the path listing back in the top menu, and correcting bugs in scrolling column views.

What's new in this version:

  • You can now turn click-to-copy on and off in Panther. You can also make click-to-copy require modifier keys so it doesn't change the filename in Save dialogs when you just click on a grayed out filename by accident.
  • Significantly increased the performance of the system-wide menu in the menu bar.
  • Corrected a bug in which Favorites with a '-' at the beginning of their names added separators to the menu rather than usable menu items if Default Folder X's hierarchical menus were turned off.
  • Fixed menu highlighting color in the Default Folder X menu bar menu so it respects the Graphite appearance.
  • Fixed reliability problems in Adobe InDesign.
  • Worked around a bug in Adobe Photoshop CS that could cause it to crash when Default Folder X was running under Mac OS 10.2 with Talking Alerts turned on in the system's Speech preferences.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the path menus in Open and Save dialogs to be disabled in Fireworks MX 2004.
  • Resolved a bug that caused PowerPoint to complain that it was "having problems with getting input from the user."
  • Added cmd-U and cmd-opt-A to the Favorites menu in the Japanese version.
  • Corrected registration code check so it ignores trailing tabs and carriage returns.
  • Fixed DFX icon so it's silver to match Panther's Finder toolbar icons.

WARNING: Versions of Default Folder X prior to 1.9 are incompatible with Mac OS X Panther. Do not install Panther without first upgrading to Default Folder X 1.9. If you have installed Panther and all applications are quitting as soon as you launch them, log in while holding down the Shift key. After doing so, disable Default Folder X in System Preferences or download and install Default Folder X 1.9.2 or higher immediately.

Default Folder X ReviewGood product but one very bad thing.... - Version: 4.3.2, 11/1/2009 09:33AM PST

So Default Folder works great. I'm a registered user and recommend it. That being said, the downside is that they frequently want you to update their product, and this is the type of thing you want to stay on top of. Updates are complicated and cumbersome. You click "yes I want to download," then go to their web page and have to hunt for the small download link on their odd web page, then download the installer, then run the installer, click OK, then you have to log out and in to have it take effect. This happens frequently enough. They could make it easier and I have asked and they acknowledge this is something they could improve but they cannot be bothered to do it yet. Because of this thing, I give it 3 stars, as it is a frequent and significant annoyance they could fix but don't.
