Product Description:

Winner of the 2002 Macworld Editors' Choice award for Best System Enhancement Utility, Default Folder X attaches a toolbar to the right side of the Open and Save dialogs in any OS X-native application (both Carbon and Cocoa). The toolbar gives you fast access to various folders and commands. You just click on the buttons to go to your favorite and recently used folders, manage the folders and files shown in the list, and make changes to your settings.

Default Folder also fixes a number of problems in Open and Save dialogs, "rebounding" back to the last selected file, putting the path listing back in the top menu, and correcting bugs in scrolling column views.

What's new in this version:

  • Dragging a file onto the Default Folder X icon in the Dock invokes Default Folder X's Get Info command.
  • In version 1.9.5, if you selected an alias and used "Move to Trash" in some Cocoa applications, DFX would move the original file, not the alias, to the Trash. This has been fixed.
  • When running under Jaguar, typing a file or folder name now correctly scrolls to that item when rebound is turned on.
  • Synchronization of your Favorites folder with Default Folder X's preferences has been made smarter. It will no longer create multiple copies of an alias in the Favorites folder when it can't find the original item.
  • Default Folder X now starts up significantly faster when you log in.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented Default Folder X from enhancing the "Save as PDF" dialog when printing within Cocoa applications.
  • Corrected a problem that disabled Default Folder X's AppleScript support under Panther.
  • Corrected the server icons in the Computer submenu of Default Folder X's Dock menu.
  • Worked around errors in Syncrosoft License Manager that caused it to crash when Default Folder X was enabled.
  • Greatly enhanced the catching of corrupted preference data and reduced chances of data corruption affecting other applications.
  • Corrected a bug in the Japanese version that prevented hierarchical menus from functioning correctly.
  • Fixed a rare crash that could occur during the startup of applications.

So Default Folder works great. I'm a registered user and recommend it. That being said, the downside is that they frequently want you to update their product, and this is the type of thing you want to stay on top of. Updates are complicated and cumbersome. You click "yes I want to download," then go to their web page and have to hunt for the small download link on their odd web page, then download the installer, then run the installer, click OK, then you have to log out and in to have it take effect. This happens frequently enough. They could make it easier and I have asked and they acknowledge this is something they could improve but they cannot be bothered to do it yet. Because of this thing, I give it 3 stars, as it is a frequent and significant annoyance they could fix but don't.
