Product Description:

Winner of the 2002 Macworld Editors' Choice award for Best System Enhancement Utility, Default Folder X attaches a toolbar to the right side of the Open and Save dialogs in any OS X-native application (both Carbon and Cocoa). The toolbar gives you fast access to various folders and commands. You just click on the buttons to go to your favorite and recently used folders, manage the folders and files shown in the list, and make changes to your settings.

Default Folder also fixes a number of problems in Open and Save dialogs, "rebounding" back to the last selected file, putting the path listing back in the top menu, and correcting bugs in scrolling column views.

What's new in this version:

  • Default Folder X has been significantly reworked "under the hood" to make it a Universal Binary capable of running on both Intel and PowerPC based Macintoshes.

  • Added upside-down "path" menus to the bottom of all hierarchical menus. This lets you go up to the enclosing folders of a folder while traversing the hierarchical menus. This feature can be very handy when you want to go to a "sibling" folder of one of the folders in your Recent Folder menu.

  • Added Spotlight/Finder Comments to Default Folder X's Get Info dialog.

  • Added a new option to catch all clicks on space behind an Open or Save dialog. If there's no Finder window where you click, Default Folder X will switch the contents of the file dialog to show the Desktop. This option is on by default, but can be turned off in the Behavior tab of the Default Folder X preferences.

  • Improved the appearance of grayed out windows when the Finder-click feature is in use.

So Default Folder works great. I'm a registered user and recommend it. That being said, the downside is that they frequently want you to update their product, and this is the type of thing you want to stay on top of. Updates are complicated and cumbersome. You click "yes I want to download," then go to their web page and have to hunt for the small download link on their odd web page, then download the installer, then run the installer, click OK, then you have to log out and in to have it take effect. This happens frequently enough. They could make it easier and I have asked and they acknowledge this is something they could improve but they cannot be bothered to do it yet. Because of this thing, I give it 3 stars, as it is a frequent and significant annoyance they could fix but don't.
