Product Description:

Winner of the 2002 Macworld Editors' Choice award for Best System Enhancement Utility, Default Folder X attaches a toolbar to the right side of the Open and Save dialogs in any OS X-native application. The toolbar gives you fast access to various folders and commands. You just click on the buttons to go to your favorite and recently used folders, manage the folders and files shown in the list, and make changes to your settings.

Default Folder also fixes a number of problems in Open and Save dialogs, "rebounding" back to the last selected file, putting the path listing back in the top menu, and correcting bugs in scrolling column views.

What's new in this version:

Default Folder X 3.0 is a significant upgrade, adding support for Intel-powered Macintoshes, setting Spotlight keywords while you're saving files, new AppleScript commands for setting default folders, enhanced hierarchical menus, and numerous other features and compatibility fixes.

Please note that if you are an existing Default Folder X user and purchased your copy before January 1, 2006, there is a $14.95 upgrade fee for this version.

New features:

  • Default Folder X is now a Universal Binary supporting both Intel and PowerPC based Macintoshes.
  • You can add Spotlight comments to a file while saving it in a Save dialog, rather than having to wait and switch to the Finder to add comments afterwards.
  • Default Folder X's Get Info window now allows you to edit Spotlight comments within Open and Save dialogs.
  • Two additional AppleScript commands, SetDefaultFolder and GetDefaultFolder, have been added to Default Folder X. With them, you can programatically control the initial folder shown in the Open and Save dialogs of any application.
  • "Upside-down path" menus are now at the bottom of all hierarchical menus. They let you go up to the enclosing folders of a folder while traversing the file system hierarchy, as well as easily see where a folder is on your hard disk.
  • You can create .zip archives from within Open and Save dialogs.
  • The width of the Name and Date columns are now remembererd in the list view of Open and Save dialogs. Without this fix, a bug in Mac OS X causes them to reset themselves every time you use a new Open or Save dialog in a Carbon application.
  • The "Finder-click" feature has been enhanced to catch clicks on the Desktop. If there is no Finder window where you click, Default Folder X will switch the file dialog listing to show the Desktop instead. This option is on by default, but can be turned off in Default Folder X's preferences.
  • Graphic effects have been improved and are more intelligent. If Quartz Extreme is not available, the "fade in" of the Finder-click shadows will be disabled.

Compatibility fixes:

  • Default Folder X now works correctly in Adobe Illustrator 10.
  • Finder-click shadows no longer appear and disappear as you press the command, option, or shift keys.
  • Apple Pro applications now show a hierarchical path menu at the top of Open and Save dialogs as they should when Default Folder X is running.
  • Corrected a bug in the Rename command that would not allow renaming a file by only changing case.
  • Corrected errors that could cause Default Folder X to use a lot of CPU time when trying to connect to applications after they first launch.
  • Numerous performance issues have been addressed.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC
  • Mac OS X 10.3.9
  • Mac OS X 10.3

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.3 or higher
  • Tiger Compatible

So Default Folder works great. I'm a registered user and recommend it. That being said, the downside is that they frequently want you to update their product, and this is the type of thing you want to stay on top of. Updates are complicated and cumbersome. You click "yes I want to download," then go to their web page and have to hunt for the small download link on their odd web page, then download the installer, then run the installer, click OK, then you have to log out and in to have it take effect. This happens frequently enough. They could make it easier and I have asked and they acknowledge this is something they could improve but they cannot be bothered to do it yet. Because of this thing, I give it 3 stars, as it is a frequent and significant annoyance they could fix but don't.
