Product Description:

Recently rated 5 mice by MacUser UK and 4.5 mice by Macworld, Default Folder X attaches a toolbar to your Open and Save dialogs in any OS X-native application. The toolbar gives you fast access to various folders and commands. You just click on the buttons to go to your favorite and recently used folders, manage the folders and files shown in the list, and make changes to your settings.

Default Folder also adds the ability to see zoomable previews in Open dialogs and to save Spotlight comments and set Finder labels for documents in the Save As dialog, while you're saving them.

What's new in this version:

  • Added an option to display the toolbar as a gray sidebar for those users that don't like the HUD look. You can turn this on in the "Options" tab of the preferences.
  • The preview generator has been rewritten, greatly improving performance and reliability, especially on Mac OS 10.4. Previews are also now created for many types of text files that weren't supported before on Leopard, and text, html, and rtf files now have previews under Tiger.
  • Fixed a problem with the path menu in Open and Save dialogs - in some cases, the hierarchical menus would not work. This has been fixed.
  • Copy and Paste now work in Default Folder X's Spotlight keyword windows.
  • Provided an option to turn off graphical UI effects like windows fading in and out, animated window resizing, and menus swooshing around.
  • If you drag the preview window smaller, it will stay that size when another preview is displayed. To return the behavior to the default "automatic resizing" mode, resize the preview window so its lower edge is at the bottom of your screen.
  • Greatly reduced the transparency of HUD menus when running on Tiger to increase readability.
  • Reduced the transparency of all HUD windows slightly.
  • Tooltips now work correctly in the Default Folder X toolbar.
  • The info panel now correctly shows the size of application packages and other packaged files.
  • Fixed a problem with Default Folder X's hotkeys and system menu not working when Mail.app was set as a login item.
  • Fixed a bug in which dragging a file onto Mail.app in the Dock would create two messages instead of one.
  • The New Folder command now works with Japanese, accented, and other special characters in old Carbon applications.
  • The rebound feature will no longer activate if you select a file before Default Folder X rebounds to the last file you selected.
  • Rebound now correctly activates the selected file so that keyboard navigation works without requiring a click in the Open dialog.
  • Eliminated repeated warnings that say "You downloaded this application from the Internet. Are you sure you want to run it?"
  • Eliminated Console warnings when Default Folder X enhances 64-bit applications.
  • Enabled Default Folder X inside of Apple's Help Viewer.
  • Default Folder X was mistakenly moving the keyboard focus away from the filename field in Save As dialogs when the dialogs were in column view.
  • Hierarchical menus will no longer show huge icons when a custom icon for a file or folder is large.
  • The "Make Save dialogs automatically default to the current document's folder" feature now works correctly with Photoshop.
  • Default Folder X now only shows Finder or Path Finder windows when the Finder or Path Finder isn't hidden.
  • Enhanced Default Folder X's "ShowMenu" AppleScript command to allow showing just one of its submenus (like recent folders).
  • Added AppleScript commands to temporarily disable and reenable Default Folder X.
  • Fixed menu fonts so that menus are always the right size when you turn on the "small menu fonts" option in the expert settings dialog.
  • Fixed support for very old Carbon applications like FileMaker Pro 5.
  • Updated the DFX AppleScript in the Extras folder to be a universal binary.

Default Folder X ReviewWouldn't want a Mac without it - Version: 4.3.4, 12/1/2009 08:01AM PST

I've used this utility since the early days, pre OSX and it's extremely useful. I'm a minimalist when it comes to software that enhances the OS but this is in the top 5 list. In combination with good tagging software (such as Tags or freeware alternatives) it's an effective combination for simplifying organization and finding things quickly. Highly recommended. On a critical note, the settings could be more clear & distinct. A built in upgrader which downloads and installs for you (like Adium) would be nice but hardly deal-breakers. Still worthy of 4.5 stars!

So Default Folder works great. I'm a registered user and recommend it. That being said, the downside is that they frequently want you to update their product, and this is the type of thing you want to stay on top of. Updates are complicated and cumbersome. You click "yes I want to download," then go to their web page and have to hunt for the small download link on their odd web page, then download the installer, then run the installer, click OK, then you have to log out and in to have it take effect. This happens frequently enough. They could make it easier and I have asked and they acknowledge this is something they could improve but they cannot be bothered to do it yet. Because of this thing, I give it 3 stars, as it is a frequent and significant annoyance they could fix but don't.
