Product Description:

Recently rated 5 mice by MacUser UK and 4.5 mice by Macworld, Default Folder X attaches a toolbar to your Open and Save dialogs in any OS X-native application. The toolbar gives you fast access to various folders and commands. You just click on the buttons to go to your favorite and recently used folders, manage the folders and files shown in the list, and make changes to your settings.

Default Folder also adds the ability to see zoomable previews in Open dialogs and to save Spotlight comments and set Finder labels for documents in the Save As dialog, while you're saving them.

What's new in this version:

  • Default Folder X now works correctly in Word 2008, Fetch, and other Carbon applications that display sheets on windows that have toolbars.
  • Fixed a problem with the preview window disappearing in Carbon applications running under Mac OS 10.4.
  • After renaming a folder, the new folder is now always correctly selected.
  • Corrected selection and window activation problems.
  • Added a hidden setting to make Finder-click show Finder windows even when the Finder is hidden. Option-click on the Settings button to turn it on.
  • The hierarchical menu in the menu bar now shows the icon of the original file when it displays an alias.

Default Folder X ReviewWouldn't want a Mac without it - Version: 4.3.4, 12/1/2009 08:01AM PST

I've used this utility since the early days, pre OSX and it's extremely useful. I'm a minimalist when it comes to software that enhances the OS but this is in the top 5 list. In combination with good tagging software (such as Tags or freeware alternatives) it's an effective combination for simplifying organization and finding things quickly. Highly recommended. On a critical note, the settings could be more clear & distinct. A built in upgrader which downloads and installs for you (like Adium) would be nice but hardly deal-breakers. Still worthy of 4.5 stars!

Very useful application.
This tool should be implemented in OS X.

So Default Folder works great. I'm a registered user and recommend it. That being said, the downside is that they frequently want you to update their product, and this is the type of thing you want to stay on top of. Updates are complicated and cumbersome. You click "yes I want to download," then go to their web page and have to hunt for the small download link on their odd web page, then download the installer, then run the installer, click OK, then you have to log out and in to have it take effect. This happens frequently enough. They could make it easier and I have asked and they acknowledge this is something they could improve but they cannot be bothered to do it yet. Because of this thing, I give it 3 stars, as it is a frequent and significant annoyance they could fix but don't.
